About Kenny

I have been teaching music all of my adult life. I teach structured, as well as, improvisational music. As an experienced gospel musician and trained jazz musician, I bring my expertise and creativity to students of all ages. Instruction on songwriting, arranging, and accompanying are part of my curriuculum. It is conservately estimated that I have taught over 1,000 students to play. I am nonored to currently be teaching some of my former students, grandchildren! Music is for EVERY age!!

At 15, I became the pianist for the church pastored by my father. Within a year, I was asked by several dozen church pianists to help them with sight reading and technique. I have taught music since that time. (I am now a "young" 67.)

I was privately instructed in sight reading, gospel, and clasical for 21 years.

I attended Gateway College of Music in Florrissant, Missouri.

I curretnly attend Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona

About the lesson

After an initial "get acquainted" meeting, I help in selecting the pathway to music for each student. Young students (3-4) begin with music appreciation. Ages 5 and above begin systematic music application individualized instruction. Adults are taught the rudiments of music, but guided to learn to play THEIR favorite music. I teach vocalists to accompany themselves, as well as accompanient for church or groups.

I have several students working full time as musicians in churches globally. I teach seniors to realize their dream of making their own music. I teach teen-agers to write and produce the music they feel within. I have taught countless vocalists to accompany themelves and others. I teach accordion, Hammond organ, and piano lessons.

With over 50 years of teaching, and 60 + years of playing, I know my craft. However, I also feel music must be fun, along with disciplined. I am known by all of my students as patient, humorous, and encouraging. My greatest joy is teaching my 7 and 4 year old grandchildren, who are performing in my recital this year.

Recently, my daughter and I went to the Phoenix Symphony, as they presented Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I am providing music for a nostalgic music show in Sedona, Az. for a vocalists in October.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to realize that music is a discipline. There are times it is fun, but there are times that the sheer discipline can bring discouragement. I was fortunate, upon enrolling me in piano at the age of 5, she informed me there was no turning back. I resented and resisted, but was consistent for 21 years. When I thought she was unfair, she would remind me that long after the other boys were finished playing baseball, entering into another career, I would be MAKING and TEACHING music. As always, Mother was right!

Details

My tuition is $120.00 for four half hour lessons. If I am needed to travel to my student, I am happy to do so with reasonable travel fees attached. I typically give a "break" for families with more than one student enrolled.
