About Corey

I teach a vast variety of music lessons to students, including piano, clarinet, piano accompaniment and music theory to all ages of students, from young children all the way to older adults. I have been taught up to a highly advanced level in all these fields and am looking to teach students from basic beginner level, through to intermediate and all the way to advanced levels.

The most amazing and wonderful part of teaching students is helping them to succeed. It always leaves me fulfilled to help and assist music students to realize and accomplish there goals, step by step, and once they have reached that final step of success, it fills both the student and I with tremendous joy. Knowing that you were highly influential and played a pivotal role in helping a student reach success, especially if it may be overcoming something they previously had struggled with but now understand and can effectively apply, is truly an indescribable and gratifying feeling and experience.

I started teaching in order to assist with the overflow of students wanting to be taught in my school. I started teaching piano and clarinet lessons to a few students that were at my school, but there was not sufficient space in the music teachers' schedules to teach them. Since most of them were beginners, it was fairly easy for me to start teaching them. After that, I went to surrounding schools, advertising my teaching services, and was able to teach 12-15 students for about a year before coming to college.

I have been learning both piano and music theory for 13 years, clarinet for 9 years and piano accompaniment for about 5 years. I have taught piano since the 10th grade and taught clarinet in my last 3 years of high school and continued to teach piano after high school for another year before coming to college, and have been assisting my peers in college with their piano skills in college. I started teaching music theory since graduating high school and have been involved in teaching many students in different programs and schools for the past 4 years. I have been accompanying a variety of musical works, from simple and basic to highly advanced with a vast array of musical instruments and have taken classes and assisted in helping teach other students how to develop their piano accompanying skills.

Firstly, I will always diagnose the student's knowledge by asking them what they have previously learnt and will ask them to demonstrate for me some of those skills. If they have never been taught before, I will slowly teach them through the basics (note names, note values, sharps, flats, etc. and show them where they can find these on their instrument or where they are written on the page). Because I believe that scales are beneficial basics to students learning instruments, I will get them started on basic ones, such as C and G major and progress to keys with more sharps and flats. If the student is past the beginner stage, I will try to match musical pieces to what they have previously learnt and that will challenge them as well. For music theory, I plan to go through what they have already learnt to build on that knowledge as well as challenge them with new material that have not yet learnt.

I have worked with students all the way from elementary schools, from the age of about 8, to high school students in their senior year and even college students who are studying piano.

I would advise for both students and their parents to put in a large amount of time and effort into researching different teachers and teaching opportunities and evaluating which option would suit them best. I would encourage them to contact the teachers, ask them in-depth questions about the lessons they are offering and call them back if it is the teacher you would like to consider. Make sure the teacher you want to teach you is qualified to do so, because you might be not learning anything new and will be stuck with relearning the same/similar material that you already learnt and will be limited in your growth.

On Saturdays, I teach for Harmony Project @ CBU on the campus of California Baptist University (CBU) from 9-12, assisting with teaching basic music theory to elementary and middle school students of underpriveledged schools in the Riverside area. A few weeks ago during one of the lessons I was teaching, a student randomly said that she enjoyed and loved the class so much and was so grateful for all the teachers that were pouring into her and making sure that she grasped the knowledge that she was learning. It certainly warmed my heart and really encouraged me tremendously to want to teach even more, with an even greater passion, just because I saw the difference I could make in one girl's life.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. "Is this teacher qualified to teach me ?"

2. "Do I have the resources (instrument, music book, etc.) that are necessary to help me meet my needs?"

3. "What price am I willing to pay to ensure my needs are met?"

4. "Will this teacher meet my needs?"
