About Robyn

For the past three years, I've worked as an elementary school certified reading tutor for grades kindergarten - fifth. We work on the skills of metacognition that every reader needs to be able to understand what they are reading. I love to read and want to instill that in my students!

I love getting students to learn to read! If you are able to determine the things they would enjoy learning about, it's a much easier process for everyone.

I grew up around teachers! My grandmothers, mother, and aunt all taught and stressed the importance of the field. Once I had my own children (who love to read for fun!), I knew just how crucial it was to instill a love of learning in them. Although I trained in journalism and communication studies, I've translated that into working with students on my passion - reading!

As a ZOOM tutor in the Clark County School District, I worked with ELL (English Language Learner) students and received many training sessions about the best way to assist. These skills translate to all students. In addition, I hold a masters degree in Communication Studies and have translated my skills from more of a journalism aspect to education - it's difficult for anyone to succeed without being able to read well!

About the lesson

By talking with the student's parent(s) first, I can learn where they have deficiencies, then custom tailor a program for them. I'd like to hear them read aloud and I ask a few questions to check for understanding. I also pull vocabulary words from the passage and see what they know about strategies to determine a word's meaning. Another area that I like to check is their reading fluency - what speed are they reading at and where do they fall in the recommended standards for their grade? Learning all of this information helps me know where to focus my attention.

I've worked with English Language Learner (ELL) students in grades kindergarten through third grade and with elementary age students through the fifth grade.

Be open to the possibilities! Reading will create so many opportunities throughout your life. It might not be easy but these are skills you will need in everything you do!

Reading chapter books with older students makes me happy, especially when the students show up to their reading group and can't wait to find out what happens next!

Details

For students in kindergarten through second grade, 30 minutes is long enough to keep their attention. A 30 minute lesson costs $20. Students in third through fifth grade are able to work for a longer period of time, 45 minutes to one hour, and that rate is $25.
