About Rachel

Hi, I'm Rachel, and I have always been passionate about reading and writing! One of my earliest memories as a little girl is writing my own creative stories, and reading from a classic book of fairytales. Books have always been my good friends. In school, I always excelled in English and Literature classes, both with creative and essay writing. In high school, while enrolled in Honors and AP English/Literature classes in high school, I not only did very well, but I also enjoyed these classes. In college, majored in English and have a B.A. in English from Drew University (Cum Laude). I also joined the English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta, in my sophomore year, and am still a member. I am a grammar nut, as well. I am a writer myself, and I have been tutoring people in English, Literature, and writing, from elementary, middle, high school, and college students, as well as helping professionals with editing/proofreading their business writing and their websites. I have been tutoring English, Literature, Writing, and Grammar ever since I was in high school. I did it throughout college and I have been doing it as a college graduate. I love the Language Arts and use my skills in these areas to help others.

About the lesson

I typically brush up on the material in question on my own and make sure I know the material well myself. It is also very important to me to get to know the student's strengths and weaknesses, as well as likes and dislikes regarding the material/class. I am very enthusiastic and I do my best to get the student to like and enjoy the material and the writing process. I make sure all of my students feel comfortable with and really understand the material. I encourage the student to develop and cultivate his/her own writing style with the confines of what an assignment/class allows. The student is also encouraged to find his/her own voice in writing.

Elementary, middle, and high school students

College students

Professionals in the working world who need help with business writing and website materials (e.g. a professional photographer who needs help with writing a letter to a magazine and help with polishing his website)

Playwrights and Script writers who need proofreading, editing, and dramaturgical insight/input to make their plays/scripts more stage/film-ready

I would advise a student to look for a teacher who is very passionate and enthusiastic about the subject(s) in question. This helps the student be more enthusiastic about a subject which he/she may be struggling with, and therefore not enjoying. Enjoying it can lead to being better at it, and eventually excelling at it. It is also important for the student to feel comfortable with the teacher, as the teacher should be positive and supportive of the student. Patience is a necessary quality for the teacher to have, as well.

I spent all day one day on a very cold weekend recently cuddled up inside reading a good book, with a cuddly cat and a hot cup of tea by my side. :)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what they think they are good at in regards to the material/subject, and what exactly their weaknesses are. What exactly do they need the teacher/tutor to help them with, and how? The more specific the answers to these questions, the better it is for the teacher in terms of helping the student.
