About Awilda

I have a strong belief all students are gifted in their way. I possess the ability to connect with children, understanding that each has his/her strengths and weaknesses. A student being able to learn is crucial to their success. Therefore, it's key that I'm aware of their needs and help nurture a love for learning.

I enjoy enriching the lives of children by first establishing a comfortable climate where they feel safe and willing to learn. I enjoy modifying instruction to ensure the child's need is being met. Watching them excel in areas they've struggled in and fostering the self esteem and confidence to motivate them is rewarding.

I started working as a Bilingual Para-Professional (Spanish) and decided to pursue my teaching degree.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. I have a Masters Degree in General and Special Education.

I have worked with the New York City Dept Of Education for 7 years and a Private School.

About the lesson

My typical process working with a new student is to first develop a relationship by inquiring about their likes, dislikes, interest, and what moves them. Developing an emotional bond is crucial to academic growth.

I have worked with children from ages 5 - 10 years old. Their needs ranging from English Language Learners to sudents with learning disabilities.

My advice would be to tell the student that first impressions are very important. There should be chemistry between the student and teacher. Both should feel a level of ease enabling the student to decide if the teacher is a good choice for him/her.

My last experience was with a child that is homeschooled. She's 16 years old and was always very motivated to learn. An event I was fond of was when we were playing a memory game and she was able to recall the sequence of events to the story read. Seeing her smile with pride was very rewarding.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about their learning styles, such as: kinesthetic, visual, or auditory. Knowing how you are able to best learn hells drive instruction.
