About Courtney

My service stands out mainly because I make sure my students are having fun while learning. Before we begin, I always make sure to get to know my students on a more personal level and from there we have fun while increasing their skills in certain subject areas. I am also Orton-Gillingham trained so am qualified in reading, writing, and spelling.

I enjoy watching students succeed. To know that they are struggling with something and then to finally see the "ah-ha" moment is truly something that makes me want to continue doing this for so many years. I also enjoy the relationships that you develop with your students. Even adults today remember their teachers and I'd like to think that mine remember me in a positive, influential way.

Ever since I was little I have always wanted to be a teacher. When I first began looking at colleges my main concern was how their education program was. After college I spent my entire summer applying to jobs and was lucky enough to begin my career in Woodbridge Township.

I am Orton-Gillingham trained. The Orton-Gillingham approach is a direct, multisensory, structured way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals.

About the lesson

Usually with a new student I like to first establish some sort of rapport. Having a relationship with a student is extremely important to me and makes the student feel more comfortable. I can usually tell pretty quickly what the student's skills are and what he or she may need additional help in. I like to start by focusing in on the student's abilities and then continuing their educational process from there.

I taught 3rd grade for three years and I taught 1st grade for two years. I will be in a 1st grade classroom again next year. The school I teach in is a Title 1 school. The students are absolutely incredible and truly want to learn. I had tutored Title 1 students after school before. I have been an ASI teacher, Academic Support Instruction, where I have focused in on students who have lower reading ability. I have also worked in an ICR, In Class Resource, room where some of my students had IEPs.

The entire past year has been super interesting and truly I am so fond of how my first grade students handled distance learning. To watch them grow and continue to learn at home was such a pleasure, and the parents had such a huge part in their student's academic achievements.

Every year our school has a Reading Celebration for the first grade. This year, it had to be done over Zoom. I was SO proud to watch my students take turns reading about an animal that they had researched and it brought tears to my eyes knowing how hard they had worked given the circumstances.
