About Kerry

I work with children who are struggling to read. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham method, which is ideal for dyslexia. I have seen wonderful progress in my students. They come to me reluctant and struggling to read and become confident, determined readers! My students actually love my tutoring sessions!

I absolutely love empowering children with confidence in reading! This confidence spreads to every subject in school and obstacle they face in life. The children that I tutor see themselves succeeding each step of the way during my sessions. Every new thing they master brings them such joy! Nothing brings me greater joy than to see this happen!

I started teaching over 25 years ago! I have always loved working with children and began working with them in churches. I have tutored children off and on for many years, mostly in reading. I have also taught in Indonesia.

I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham methodology which every dyslexia curriculum is based upon. (Scottish-Rite, Wilson, etc.) I am trained in linguistics. I am currently getting my teaching degree, also.

About the lesson

First, I give the student an assessment which provides a detailed summary of their grade level, mastered concepts, and areas that need work. Next, we schedule the first session and begin the student's road to success!

Most of the students I have worked with have had ADHD and dyslexia. I have also worked with students with ASD.

Be sure the tutor has a thorough way of assessing the student.

If the student is a struggling reader, I would make sure the tutor understands the Orton-Gillingham methodology and use a specific proven curriculum.

In any subject, I would confirm that the tutor will work on the foundational skills before anything else.

I would make sure they are patient and work well with children.

I watched a freshman in high school who was told he could not learn jump several grade levels in reading after my tutoring!

Do they have any family members who struggle with the same thing or have been diagnosed with dyslexia or dysgraphia?

Are they stuck on a certain concept or have they always struggled with the subject?

Details

For a reading assessment I charge $45. If your child needs both the reading and math assessments it is $85. For one weekly 50-minute tutoring session I charge $40, two for $75, three sessions for $105.
