About Nathan

Being a college student who took the SAT a couple of years ago, my experience is different from many professionals in the field. I know exactly how students feel and what students are going through, what thoughts are going through their heads, in the weeks, days, and moments leading up to the exam. These are all factors that are just as important as technical preparation for the exam, and I like to take them into consideration as well.

I enjoy connecting with and getting to know students as people first. This allows me to better understand them and understand how to tutor them, and also builds a layer of trust between the student and me.

I got started tutoring through a peer tutoring program at my high school. I struggled so much in my first tutoring assignments because I had such a hard time vocalizing the knowledge and concepts that I knew and was familiar with. However, over time I had to learn how to re-learn material and teach myself material in a way that allowed me to explain lessons to each of my individual students.

I have never been formally trained to tutor for the SAT, but ever since taking my first SAT in my junior year of high school (I scored a 1560 with an 800 in Math), I started studying the test online to understand it better. I had been tutoring some underclassmen in my high school as well as some family friends in classes I had taken in the past and knew this would be useful knowledge to expand my tutoring to SAT as well. So even though I haven't received formal training for the SAT, I have had experience tutoring students in the past, and I can proudly report that all of the students I have tutored either experienced at least a 120 point increase in their test scores or scored above a 1400 on their first try.

About the lesson

I like to take some time (off-the-clock, unpaid) to get to know the student first. Get to know the student's interests, thinking/learning style, and just who they are as a person because this helps me understand how to better tutor a student. Not everyone responds to tutoring the same way, and so my style (tone of voice, examples, explanations, etc.) needs to adjust to fit my student.
