About Angel

I am an 18 yr old saxophonist who has experience in Jazz/Improvisation, R&B, Funk, and Classical.

I have performed at various esteemed venues such as the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley Jazz Club, Takoma Station, and the Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival. I am mentored by and have performed with various D.C musicians such as Paul Carr, Elijah Balbed, Amy Bormet, Jc Jefferson Jr, Kelton Norris, and Chris Hon.

I got started teaching after my private saxophone teacher, Paul Carr, suggested that I get into it. At first I was hesistant due to the mistreatment of educators in our current day. After honing in my thoughts and remembering the mark I want to make in this music(Jazz), I decided to take the leap and help others in their musical journey just as others have done for me.

About the lesson

When I start working with a new student I first ask who their favorite saxophonist is and/or simply what their favorite songs/pieces are. Through that I get a sense of what their ear is leaning into. If they are a total beginner I like to establish posture and embouchure to prevent lasting bad habits. If they have some experience, especially if they are already into improvisation, I like to hear them play a brief tune to get an idea of where they are at.

I have worked with complete beginners with no experience on any instruments to experienced students who are learning saxophone for jazz band while playing another woodwind instrument.

The biggest part of finding a teacher is finding someone that you feel comfortable with. One that you can connect to and one that you feel has your best interest in mind. If you go into each lesson walking on egg shells or simply disliking the character of your teacher than that is a key sign to look for another one. Also, there is no one size fits all teaching method for music. Finding a teacher who's approach syncs with your goals is crucial to your musical and personal growth.
