About Richard
I do fabricated metal sculpture, in copper and other metals. I weld, cut, hammer, bend, patina, and many other things, to get the effect that I want.

I have always loved making things, and working with my hands. I also enjoy solving problems, and figuring out how to make things. I enjoy teaching, and am a patient teacher.
Someone approached me to teach them welding.
I have attended numerous conferences related to various aspects of metalworking, including metalshaping, metalsmithing, and blacksmithing. In 2016 I took a champleve (steel etching and enameling) class from Sharon Massey, and attended the Rocky Mountain Smith's blacksmithing conference. In 2013 I studied patinas under Patrick Kipper. In 2012 I studied raising and chasing under David Huang. In 2007 I attended the Rocky Mountain Smiths blacksmithing convention. In 2006 he studied chasing and repousse under Valentin Yotkov. In 2005 I studied sculpture at Anderson Ranch with James Surls. He has studied sculpture at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and blacksmithing under David Norrie.

The first thing we do is discuss what the student whats to learn. At that point we go into direct instruction. Often we work on a student's project, so that the student can apply what he is learning.
I have worked primarily with adults, often with a specific project.
Look for someone whose work you admire.
I enjoy delivering a piece of sculpture to a public art program, working to get it installed. That is the culmination of a lot of work.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The main thing, is what do they want to learn? Sculpture is a large field.
