About Stewart

My passion for helping others uncover their voice at any age and any experience level has helped me develop the necessary skills to provide a safe place in my studio for authentic vocal exploration. It is my duty as a teacher to give every voice the best of my training and experience in order to produce confident singers, and I do so with great pride. With ten years of one-on-one voice teaching experience, and three years of public school choir directing experience, I am confident in my ability to help others on their vocal journey. My training includes: Bachelor of Arts in Music from Sam Houston State University, and a Masters of Music in Opera Performance. My personal journey has led me to perform in a number of local and international venues, including summer programs, special church invitations, outreach program, and fundraisers. I am currently teaching from my personal studio, on roster with Houston Grand Opera chorus, and teach middle school choir in Spring ISD.

I began teaching private voice during my studies at Sam Houston State University at a local high school and loved it. My students brought great personality to the lesson, they worked hard, and we made great improvements together.

About the lesson

The first lesson involves talking about personal goals. I’ve had students who simply enjoy singing for themselves, those that want to karaoke, prepare for school auditions, role preparation in a community performance, or try something new just do try it. All are valid and wonderful reasons to take lessons.

We may talk about what to expect: stretch/warm up and their importance at the beginning of each lesson, song choices and how we will choose them, and the expectations of the student while at home.

Students that practice at home in a consistent manner enjoy greater benefits from the voice lessons as they are reinforcing habits we develop together, allowing for faster improvement.

A simple check of the student’s ability takes place with short vocal exercises. Then, we may address one or two issues that will lead to better sound and/or ease in the body.

I’ve taught students as young as 13 and old as 65. I have most experience working with total beginners. They’ve never sung in front of anyone, don’t know how to read music, and are usually very shy about singing. Those are my favorite students to teach, actually.

Do not settle for anyone. Ask about their training, their experience. What kind of students to they teach? Do students come and go a lot or does he/she have consistent students studying with them? What is their schedule like? Will they be cancelling a lot of your lessons because of their own performances? You want someone who not only is experienced in performing but who has equally a strong passion for teaching. Go with your gut. Some personality combinations simply won’t work as well as others. Give them a try if their experience and training sounds great but don’t be afraid to move on if you’re not feeling confident in the team dynamic.

Why do you want to take lessons? What are your expectations and how fast do you reasonably expect to begin seeing those results? Speak these thoughts out loud with the teacher.
