About Gail

My first priority is the well-being of the student. I am a member of the VoiceCare Network, and I incorporate healthy techniques to protect a student's vocal instrument.

I believe that students who engage in the process of learning, by practicing and studying new techniques and repertoire, do well in my studio. My students have gone on to win awards at both district and state level festivals, although that is not the primary goal. The primary goal is to love to sing!

I have been teaching privately for over 20 years in the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area. I have also taught in the public and private schools here for over 17 years.

I enjoy working with all different types of singers, ages 13 and up. I always learn things from my students! Whether it be new repertoire or a new technique discovery, I love to be enlightened by the students as much as I enjoy sharing my love of singing with them.

I also enjoy sharing in the accomplishments of my singers, whether large or small. Some may win awards; some may sing in front of a small group of people for the first time. It is all rewarding to see students achieve the goals they have set.

I've been a vocal musician since age 5, and have always loved to sing. When our church choir director was suddenly taken ill, she requested that I conduct the choir for the Sunday service. I did so - and was bitten by the joy of making music with others. That was at age 16! I have studied music my entire life and been given many opportunities to share my "unrefined" talent. I began teaching in earnest when I started college though - and I haven't stopped since.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (BME) with a vocal/choral concentration from Northern Michigan University, and a Master's Degree in Music Education (MAME), also with a vocal/choral concentration from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.

I have specific training in vocal technique and vocal health through the VoiceCare Network.

About the lesson

Our first meeting would be spent getting to know one another. We would also explore your vocal range and tone quality to determine where we should best start. I believe in working on posture, breathing, and healthy phonation (production of tone). I also am interested in the goals you would like to pursue, and to work with you to create a plan to achieve them.

I have worked with students of all ages (13 and up). I have also worked with students who have set goals of learning all genres of music, from classical to hard rock. I believe the best students are those who have a true desire to learn to sing better in whatever repertoire they choose!

Details

I charge $15 per half hour lesson. The fees for the month are due in advance at the beginning of the month. If for any reason a student must miss a lesson (other than illness), and with 24 hour notice, I am more than happy to reschedule the lesson. If a student is ill, we can make up the lesson as soon as the student is healthy again. I do not believe in singing with a sore throat or laryngitis!
