About Randy

With a Master of Musical Arts degree in Classical guitar and being adept at playing and teaching Fingerpicking, Electric, and Classical technique, I can guide you into developing your own style. With knowledge of Music Theory and understanding of the fretboard, you can play practically any style of music. Music theory, of course, applies to every intstrument. Do you know enough to be confused? I can help you get a handle on it.

I certainly enjoy "AHA!" moments when a student realizes a concept or is able to play well something they've been working on.

After a few years of self-study and playing in some Rock bands where I taught the other players their parts, even keyboard, I started teaching at a local music store in Alabama. After earning my Bachelor's degree I developed the Guitar Program at The University of N AL in 1983.

My focus for my Bachelor's Degree was Guitar performance, Voice, and Music Education. I developed and implemented the Guitar Program for a university for 9 years. I now have a Master's degree in Classical Guitar Performance and have been teaching over 40 years. I finished the course work in the Doctorate program and did not write a dissertation, which means my status is known as ABD; "All But Dissertation".

About the lesson

I assess the student's level of proficiency and knowledge of the fretboard or singing technique and we discuss what type of music they are interested in playing or singing.

Some of my students from the Muscle Shoals area are hit songwriters and a couple of them have won Grammys.

Make sure the teacher can describe what they are teaching and that they don't play during a significant portion of the lesson time, or talk on the phone.

There are many open mic events in the state where local songwriters share their songs.

Will I have the time to practice enough to achieve the level of proficiency I desire?

Am I dedicated enough to accept seemingly slow progress?
