About Sophia

With a background in jazz performance, musical theatre and a solid foundation in classical singing, I provide a well-rounded approach to vocal coaching. Also, with virtual lessons, you will be traveling the country with me and my family as we tour our school bus house around the US. I have taught piano and voice lessons for 15 years and have directed a number of choirs, both youth and adult. I have starred in over 35 musical theatre productions, most recently as Violet Hilton in the musical SideShow. I also enjoy teaching youth acting classes for the Theater Arts Guild at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Skagit County.

Building confidence in my students is the most rewarding part of my job. So much of our ability as singers and performers stems from how we feel about ourselves. As I help students grow in skill and talent, I also stress the importance of positive self-talk and healthy life habits.

Teaching occurred organically as I paused performing to have my children, but still wanted to have a positive impact musically in my community. As a skilled vocalist people have always approached me, asking for voice lessons both for themselves and their children.

I have been a singer and performer my entire life. I've starred in over 35 stage productions. I have taught in person private lessons since 2005. I have directed several local choirs, both youth and adult. I have music directed multiple stage musicals as well.

About the lesson

We'll start by getting to know each other a bit. We'll discuss goals and what you're expectations of me are. We'll check your range through a series of vocal warmups. Once I'm familiar with your voice and the specific goals you have, we will create a game plan which will include warmups specific to you. Pieces of music specific to you. And exercises tailored to your needs.

Young, old, experienced, and not. I have worked with a wide range of students. I've helped new young students find their confidence. I've coached teens and young adultsaadults they've prepared to audition for major choral groups and prestigious college music programs. I have also worked with people in their 50s, 60s and 70s for various reasons. Some were already professional singers that were out of practice, others had never sung in front of anyone before.

Look for a teacher that has experience in the genre of music you want to explore. For instance, I am a great teacher when it comes to jazz, musical theatre, Pop, contemporary, and some classical. But if you were wanting to persue strictly classical I would recommend you to another vocal coach with a specifically classical/opera background.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Having clear goals is super important for anyone serious about singing. Something you can ask yourself before approaching a teacher is, "Am I ready to hear a strangers opinion of my voice? Can I handle constructive criticism?". If your answer is yes, then ask away. I believe there are no dumb questions.

Details

Single 30 minute sessions are $30. Ongoing weekly 30 minute lessons are $120 per month, paid at the beginning of each month. Payments can be made via PayPal or Venmo (preferred).
