About Susan
My passion lies in helping singers get connected to the breath and sound. I'm a technician and a teacher with over 35 years of experience in teaching. I am also a professional singer and continue to do that. However the bulk of my time spent now hoping singers free thier instrument so that you can reach their fullest potential. I have equal success in musical theater and pop genres as well as classical. I have a doctorate in my field and run to Voice and Opera program for CUNY in New York City.
I begin teaching quite gradually and with the intention of helping out young singers. I was singing full-time but recognized that I had a capacity for explaining the process and helping each person individually with their understanding of it. 25 years ago I secured the position at CUNY as their voice teacher and have continued as their full-time voice teacher.
I have my bachelors degree from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. I have my masters and doctorate from Eastman School of Music. I have also sung professionally for over 30 years.

I prefer to work more long-term with students. However I'm not opposed to doing an occasional check up or fix per se with more advanced students. We typically begin with a little bit of physical stretching and vocal warm-ups. It's very important to loosen the muscles so that agility and range can be reached more easily. I spend most of the time discussing breath and sound connection and how to support properly.
I have worked with classical singers, pop singers, musical theater singers, and even some rappers. I find that the process applies to all singing. It just requires an understanding of placement and style.
When you're looking for a teacher find someone you're comfortable with emotionally. It's important to feel safe when you're doing something as a vulnerable singing. The connection between teacher and student is a sacred and personal connection. Make sure that you find a technician that understands how to impart the information in a way that you understand it.
I recently staged a new opera called Fireworks for our Opera program. I watched the students grow musically and vocally through that process. There's a lot to be said for performing as you're learning. It teaches you something that standing in the studio or a practice Room cannot.

$80 hour
$40 1/2 hour
This does not include a pianist. I generally work specifically on technique and can work without a pianist. However if you need one you will have to secure one separately. It's best to have a pianist at your location instead of mine if we are doing an online lesson. I'm happy to discuss this more in detail through message.
