About Lessonscom

I am trained to teach Pop, Rock, and R&B vocals to any age of student with the drive to work hard. I teach with the philosophy that every voice has a purpose, whether you're looking to run with the big leagues or learn for fun. Music is my joy and my passion, I look forward to bringing that into your life!

I took interest in music education and coaching when I was studying Theater at Coronado School of the Arts. I had a large vocal range, but in the lower register, so I was always singled out for not being able to hit the higher notes like the rest of the girls. In hopes of becoming a better vocalist, I took the Music Education study track to learn the proper techniques I wasn't taught in group class. I ended up falling in love with teaching through the camps and mock lessons we gave as exercises. After graudating with highest honors in my field, I took on my first student and continued studying Music Education. I now have a B.A. and teach around 10 of my own students from all over the world.

I am a Berklee College of Music graduate with a B.A. in Vocal Performance and am currently studying for my M.A. Prior to this, I attended Coronado School of the Arts where I studied Stage Performance, Theater, Music Production, and Music Education. I graduated Summa Cum Laude (highest honors) for my achievements in 2017.

About the lesson

The first lesson with a new student is not a copy-paste process. Every student comes in with a different style, experience level, and vision for who they want to become, and it is my job as the coach to tailor to the student's personal goal while also pushing them towards it.

I always start with some vocal warmups to see how the student is performing that day and also benchmark the student's progress. I ask my new students to prepare a song of their choice in advance, and following the warm ups I have them perform it top to bottom for me. We then dive into what works, what doesn't, and how we can improve. As we keep working, we'll choose repertoire together that pushes my student to learn new techniques.

My students currently range from ages 4-46; there's about a 50/50 split between those who want a career in singing/performing and those who want to learn for fun.

I've taught theater, R&B, pop & rock vocalists, songwriters, stage performers, and 'self accompanied' vocalists. I have had a few young autistic students as well as a few non native english speakers.

When hiring a vocal teacher, make sure they not only are capable of teaching within your genre/needs, but also make sure that they compliment your personality and are visibly ready to support you. There are a lot of factors that come into play for performing your best vocally - your day to day emotions, your muscle condition, your values when it comes to being a physical performer - and your teacher should respect and take into account all of these factors. Ask yourself, is this a coach who I am willing to take criticism from and work hard for?

If we're talking worldwide historical events, I was very pleased to hear of students in San Antonio organizing a "drive by parade" for a member or their community celebrating their 83rd birthday alone in quarantine.

In musical news, I'm both saddened but proud of the message major festival companies are sending by doing the right thing in rescheduling/cancelling gatherings for the well being of the fans.

And personally - around two weeks ago, Cirque du Soleil put on a livestream performance of highlights from their current shows. I watched the whole thing "with" my friends (we were all in a Google Hangouts call quarantined from our own homes) and we had dinner "together" and played music through screenshare; it was a wonderful time!

"Are my needs relevant to what goes on in the lesson, both physically and mentally?"

"Is this something I should talk to my vocal teacher about, or would it be better for me to seek outside additional help?"

"Is my teacher holding me back from learning by not meeting my needs, or am I holding myself back by not making personal adjustments (or both)?"
