About Madison

Joy is at the center of everything we do at Wise Music Studio. I provide a space where students can imagine and create spaces and musics that speak not only to what is, but also what could be. By broadening students’ tonal “tool boxes” through listening and music-making experiences, I enable students to more richly imagine and name their world. Within my own classrooms, I bring joy into the learning community and allow students the space to explore their own musical interests and inclinations.

I truly believe I have the best job in the world. I have the privelege of helping students realize their full musical potential and achieve their goals. My greatest goal as a teacher is to create an environment that welcomes all students, and leaves them more kind, passionate, imaginative, and whole.

I've been teaching for as long as I can remember! I am one of six children, and have been caring for children and teaching since I was a child myself. My formal training in teaching was sparked during my undergraduate years, when I was reminded of my love of teaching while working at a summer camp. I continued to pursue teaching opportunities, and earned my Master's degree in Music Education.

I have taught in public and private settings, with students ranging from infancy to adulthood. I've taught in four states, and I currently hold my Massachusetts teaching license.

I have a vast range of experience and training that makes me an excellent piano, voice, and music theory instructor. I am the General and Vocal Music Specialist at UP Academy Dorchester in Boston, MA. I have broad expertise as a children's music instructor and teaching artist, including as a teaching artist the Rainey Institute in Cleveland, OH, Lower School Music Instructor at the Town School for Boys in San Francisco, CA, the Music Settlement in Cleveland Heights, OH, Shaker Heights Cooperative Preschool in Shaker Heights, OH, and my private piano studio.

I earned my MA in Music Education from Case Western Reserve University in May 2020, and a BA in Music Theory and a B.Mus. in Vocal Performance from the University of Idaho. My research in gender roles within opera, and operatic mad scenes culminated in a thesis on Mark-Anthony Turnage’s opera Anna Nicole. Recent performing credits include the title role in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Le Prince Charmant in Massenet’s Cendrillon, and Marcellina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in Salzburg, Austria.

I play multiple instruments including piano, guitar, banjo, recorder, and ukulele. I am inspired by play-based learning, and am passionate about helping everyone find their inner musician!

About the lesson

In working with a new student, I let their interests and needs lead the way, while still providing structure to ensure progress. I frequently incorporate popular music that students enjoy to increase the buy-in, enjoyment, and incentive to improve.

I have worked with remarkably diverse spectrum of students throughout my years of teaching. I have taught in wealthy private schools, and turnaround Title I schools. I have worked in the suburbs, in rural settings, and in the city. I pride myself on being flexible, friendly, and approachable to the wide range of students and families I serve.

I have a student who can struggle to regulate his frustration when he faces challenges in his academic classes. I have offered him supplemental lessons throughout the year, and after a particularly tough week, I asked him to set a challenge for himself. He said he wanted to play "Counting Stars" by OneRepublic on the piano. Despite the scope of this piece, he dedicated himself to learning and practicing this song to perfection. The rewarding moment of this all was watching my student work through his frustration and play a song that has great meaning to him.
