About Corey

I am going on my 4th and final year as a Music Education major at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. I have a summer of experience giving voice lessons at Patty's Dance and Music Studio in Granville, Ohio, and a semester of co-teaching a community voice class at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. I am an honor roll student, and have had 3 semesters of classroom experience. I am currently preparing for a senior vocal recital this fall, and to student teach this spring. I have 11 years of ensemble experience on the flute, three years of private voice lessons plus 10 years of vocal ensemble experience.

I have found that one-on-one and small group lessons are my favorite to teach, so I am excited to find music students to help over the summer. I can give beginning flute lessons, voice lessons for beginners and mid-range vocalists, and help students prepare for their own college and high school music experience. Or, if you just want to better understand music theory and earn some basic piano understanding, I can help with that as well.

I decided to become a music education major based on my wonderful experience with my music teachers. I have a passion for music, and for making music fun and accessible for everyone.

I an currently studying to become a music teacher, so I have three years of specialized music and education-based training and knowledge.

About the lesson

First, I want to know more about you, and what you want out of the lessons. Next, I will want to know your experience and background in the subject. I want to give as personalized an experience as I possibly can.

I have worked with primarily voice students one-on-one, and this has mostly been with middle school students. However, I have experience helping college freshman with their music theory and ear training, a few high school vocalists, and I have group/classroom experience with all grade levels.

I would advise students to look for someone who cares about them, and about the music. Music and performance is all about vulnerability, and you have to find someone who can help you with that in a safe environment.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to a teacher about your needs, first ask why you need these lessons. Know that you are in charge of this experience, and your needs matter. You should think about the kind of experience level you want your teacher to have, as well. Do you need an expensive teacher with a high level degree that will teach you how to become a professional performer? Maybe you do. Or do you need someone who will teach you the basics or set you up for future lessons and courses? Maybe you just want someone who will give you a fun experience. Think about that, and choose wisely.

Details

Lessons are typically a half hour, so I would charge about $10 a voice lesson, or $20 an hour. For Elementary students or flute students, I would charge $8 a lesson, or $16 an hour.
