About Katherine

I'm a Juilliard-trained singer and music teacher. My performing career has taken me to opera houses in Germany, Alice Tully Hall and Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, performances with the Oregon and Seattle Symphonies, and concerts in Canada, England, Italy, Germany, and Austria.

I trained privately at the Britten Pears Programme, Franz Schubert Institut, Heidelberger Frühling Festival, and Georg Solti Accademia with teachers like Elly Ameling, Thomas Hampson, Thomas Quasthoff, Ian Bostridge, and many others.

In addition to private lessons that I've given over the past ten years, I've taught at Clark College in Vancouver, WA, since the 2019-20 academic year. I have experience teaching over Zoom as we deal with the pandemic.

At Juilliard, I was also a Teaching Fellow in the prestigious Ear Training department. I taught both undergraduate and graduate students the essential skills of reading and hearing Western music, from intervals and chords to complex rhythm with mixed-meter and both tonal and atonal sight-singing.

I am pleased to offer lessons in voice of all styles. Although most of my performing experience is in classical music, I have an intimate physiological and theoretical concept of how to sing. Pedagogy is the same from style to style, because the structure of the vocal cords and larynx follow the same structure in everyone.

I also offer lessons in Music Theory and Ear Training, sharing the experience I both learned and taught at Juilliard, and my undergraduate school, St. Olaf College.

I work with all levels of musician and all ages. If you've trained for many years, or have absolutely no experience, I'll be able to guide you through the next steps in your musical journey.

The last thing I'd like to share with you is that I'm transgender. I'm one year into transitioning from make your female, and continue to sing in my tenor voice. On the one hand my identity affects every part of who I am, but on the other, true knowledge remains true regardless of who shares it. That's what I do in my teaching with every student I meet. I have experience teaching trans women and trans men, and can help navigate a voice change. When I teach, not only do I get the joy of watching students make new connections and celebrate the new things that they can achieve, I feel honored to pass on my experiences and my love of music to others. I've had many generous teachers, and teaching is one way I "pay it forward."
