About Guruji:
Guruji Surendra received intensive training in Hindustani Classical music under eminent gurus: Pandit M.S. Pendse, Pandit V.U.Rajurkar, Guruji Radhakrishna Murthy and Pandit G.N.Dantale. Guruji with his unparelleled dedication and incessant practice, did his "SANGEET VISHARAD" in Hindustani Vocal in the year 1969.
He had unique opportunity of being a supporting vocalist to world famous distinguished artists like Ustad Amir Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Rajguru Basvaraj and Pandit Dinker Kaikani.
With Hindustani classical music grounding, Guruji Surendra has moulded his voice into singing Ghazals, Bhajans, Qawali, Folk songs and Bollywood Songs. He has given many performances of Hindustani vocal and Sugam Sangeet, in different parts of the United States. He sings songs in 8 different Indian Languages.
The Theatre and Kathak dance were important part of his life since childhood and he has been an actor. Besides giving several stage performances in Telugu, English and Hindi, he has acted in a variety of T.V. serials and received several awards for being Best Actor, notably the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary National Award, from the Andhra Pradesh Film Council in 1990. He choriographed several Dance Ballets.
Guruji has been practicing yoga for over 58 years. He is “E-RYT 500 YACEP”, Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher. He did his postgraduate diploma in Advanced Yoga Science and Therapy from Kundalini Yoga Research Institute, Hyderabad,India and is a disciple of Yogaachaarya Padma Bhushan Dr.Kovvuru Balaiah. Guruji teaches Scientific Yoga that consists of combination of Aasanaas (Postures) , concentrating on Chakras (Energy Centers) and Kumbhaka (Breath Control). He is one of very few teachers who practice and teach Kriya Yoga. He is an expert in Techniques of teaching Jala-Nethi and Sutra-Nethi, that cure Sinuses and Allergies. Very experienced teachers enjoy his sessions in Praanaayama (Breathing Techniques) and Dhyaana (Meditation). Besides teaching Yoga in his Studio in Iselin, Guruji teaches in several fitness centers and Adult day health-care centers in New Jersey.
Besides being a Great Yoga Teacher, Guruji has the following accomplishments to his credit.
In addition to making the arts an integral part of his life, Guruji has been practicing Martial Arts and has the distinction of being the first Black Belt holder in Karate, in the State of Andhra Pradesh in Shotokan Style. He is a Gold Medalist and refereed several International Karate Champioships in India and abroad.
He is the founder Director of SwarSaagar LLC, a Center for performing Arts. SwarSaagar seeks to promote the culture of India by offering classes in a variety of areas like Hindustani Vocal, Tabla, Harmonium and Yoga.
I beleive in results. There's no compramise with regards to perfection. I enjoy teaching correct Swars and Taal and teach to be a professional performer. I enjoy when my students perform.
