About McKenzie

My favorite type of work is helping others to achieve their personal goals. I was a tutor all throughout college in a variety of subjects and loved being able to help my peers gain confidence in their skills and make the grades they wanted in their classes. I am currently transitioning to a new job as a Reserve Barista at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle, WA, but am looking to begin tutoring again in my free time. Check out my LinkedIn profile for more about me and my education! (concealed information)

I was first asked to tutor when I was in highschool, and I tutored a middle school student in algebra. I was then recommended to be a tutor for the Spanish Department and History & Political Science Department my second year of college because of my performance in my classes.

I can tutor a wide variety of political science/government/civics and history topics because I have a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies (International Relations) from Bridgewater College. I also minored in Spanish language during college, and tutored Spanish for 3 years while I was in school. Furthermore, I took many Advanced Placement (AP) classes in high school, namely AP English Literature and Composition, AP Comparative Government and Politics, AP European History, AP Macroeconomics, AP U.S. Government and Politics, and AP U.S. History. I passed all of these exams.

My typical process for working with a new student is to have the student describe to me what they are seeking from tutoring services, where they are struggling, and what areas they'd specifically like to see improvement in (what goals they have). I also like to ask them about their learning style (auditory, visual, kinesthetic), because I think that is key for retention of learning. I also like to spend a little bit of time introducing myself and sharing a little bit about me, and give the student the space to tell me a bit about themselves as well to facilitate trust and a professional level of familiarity.

I have worked with students ranging from middle school age to college. I have worked with students who are only temporarily looking for help with a specific project or class, and I have worked with some students over multiple years on the same subject/class (e.g. Spanish 101-103).

Try to determine whether or not the teacher is actually passionate about their subject(s) of expertise. Even a teacher should always have the mindset of being a lifelong learner. If the teacher isn't motivated by the subject, I'd say they probably won't be motivated to be a very good teacher.

Within the past month, I visited to Seattle fior the first time before deciding to move there and I took a day trip to a nearby mountain town - Leavenworth - with a few friends I know in the area. We visited a crepe café for lunch and then purused many of the local shops that were open. It snowed the entire time we were there and the small town was crowded with tourists, which, just before Christmas, made the experience pretty magical. I had a really nice time spending the day with my friends, and the town itself was also a blast!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What their primary learning style is (or even secondary, too). This is so important for the teacher to know because you can be a kinesthetic (hands-on) learner, and the teacher is only presenting the material to you via lecture. You won't learn as well as you could this way, and both you and the teacher will be frustrated by your lack of progress. Also, have a specific list of the key areas of the class/subject you're struggling in (and maybe a few examples like past tests, homework assignments, etc) so that the teacher knows which areas to focus on, since you both won't have enough time for them to re-teach you the entire class.

I was only paid $7.25/hr in college to tutor, but outside of school doing tutoring privately, I have charged anywhere from $10-20/hr on a case-by-case basis. I am sensitive to the fact that every student I tutor is coming from a different financial situation and I may need to accomodate them as necessary so they can still receive the help they need.
