About Alan

I have a wealth of knowledge from coaching all levels of play for over 35 years. My coaching style varies depending on the individual needs. For the beginner players, I am patient and do my best at making it fun and enjoyable but at the same time learning a great deal. For the more advanced players, I look to bring new elements to their games and help them to reach new levels of play that they didn't think possible.

I love seeing any student improve! My academy has produced 58 high school singles or doubles champions and over 400 sectionally ranked players, so most students who hear about the academy think it is only for top players. NOT TRUE! I love working with beginners who can see themselves progressing on a weekly basis. I love having an intermediate player coming in for some work on her/his serve and leaving with a much better serve. I guess, the bottom line, I have a passion for coaching tennis.

I played professionally for three years and earned a top 400 ATP ranking.  After the tour I started coaching at a local club.  I found I really enjoyed it and decided to make it my profession.  I enjoyed helping players to improve.

As to general education, I have a Bachelors of General Studies from UNH where I graduated Magna Cum Laude. As for tennis specific, I realize that a tennis player consists of four main components.  The physical game, the emotional game, the technical game, and the mental game...it is a lot to keep up with!  I read about the best ways to train, I read books on sports psychology, I am constantly looking for better ways of coaching the mental game such as shot selection in match play.  Becoming a better tennis coach is a continual process that I enjoy tremendously.

Typically with any new students I find out as much information about them as I can.  How long have they been playing tennis?  What are their goals?  How much practice time do they have available?  In this way I can tailor the lesson to them.

I have worked with all levels of play from beginners to national level players.  As a rough guess, I would say that 90% of my students that have been the best in NH or New England I have have started as beginners.

I would ask the coach for a list of players that they have develped in the area.  Usually the proof is in the pudding.  As my young students like to say, "You have a lot of weird sayings!"

Last week my oldest daughter and her baby, Addison, came over to our house and my youngest daugher was with us too.  It was really special in that we were all together.  All three generations.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should definitley take a true look at their games.  What are their goals?  What are their strengths and weaknesses?  What exactly are they looking for out of the lesson?  What do they want to accomplish from the lesson?  Many players think they need a better backhand but, the real truth, is they need better footwork.  Or they need to have better shot selection with their backhand.  "Measure twice, cut once"
