About Ray

Hi I'm Ray!

I graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a B.A. in History and Anthropology and a Masters Degree in Teaching from National-Louis University. For the past eleven years I have taught numerous history and social studies courses at the high school level and received the highest possible rating of “excellent” on the Danielson educator evaluation tool. I also have multiple years experience in after school tutoring /supported study programs as well as summer enrichment offerings.

My greatest strength as an educator is my willingness to listen to my students and understand where they need extra academic support. I absolutely LOVE history and all things social studies, but what is really important is making sure my students are equipped with the skills and confidence to reach their full potential. Whether you need assistance with understanding historical concepts, reading or writing skills, study habits, or analytical skills, I am here to help.

I really enjoy tutoring because it's an opportunity to help motivated students succeed by identifying areas for improvement, setting goals, and then working together to exceed those goals.

I decided to become a teacher because of the incredible impact my own teachers had on me. I love history but I love working with students even more. I started teaching in 2011 after finishing my teacher certification coursework and student teaching.

I have 11 years of experience teaching history at the high school level. My bachelor's degree is in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and my Masters degree is in Education from National-Louis University.

About the lesson

First and foremost I will work with new student's to develop their goals and identify content and skill areas they would like to improve. Once that is done, we can put in place an action plan to ensure they're developing the skills and learning the content that will help them reach their goals.

In my 11 years of experience I have worked with a wide range of students including honors/AP, college prep, and diverse learners such as English language learners and those with individualized educational plans.

Find someone who is just as good of a listener as they are a teacher. It's really important for a tutor to understand the goals, questions, and concerns of their students in order to really understand how to best help them.

The most recent event that comes to mind is reading the end of year student surveys and hearing the different ways my class made a positive impact with my students.
