About Raphael

I’m a experienced and passionate mathematics and physics tutor and a recent graduate from a Masters in Mathematics from the University of Oxford. I achieved stellar grades in my GCSEs - scoring 100% in several exams, four A*s in my A-levels and great results in my MAT entrance exams along with a variety of medals from various maths competitions. I’m a freelance software engineer and researcher (having worked in climate modelling, deep learning, theoretical economics and data analysis computational methods) and have been teaching people for over 7 years.

I have been teaching people for over 7 years, starting with my friends whilst still in school, frustrated by the limitations of learning in a large class setting and the resulting shaky foundations and maths anxiety it can produce. Subsequently, I helped run a maths club to help students explore its recreational aspects within a different context for much the same reasons and have been teaching ever since.

My teaching focuses on growing the student’s understanding of the fundamental concepts underpinning the formulae that maths and the sciences are so often reduced. This allows my students to not only understand that they should apply a certain formula to a situation but why they should do so, allowing them to better adapt their knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios and developing their intuitions of the subject as achieving the top grades and building a resilient framework for future learning requires.

About the lesson

I specialise in a one-to-one flexible teaching style, tailoring my approach to each student’s learning style: identifying and targeting their weaknesses to help them build a strong foundation and toolkit to serve them well throughout their future studies, as well as developing their strengths and fostering a curious, analytical; problem-solving mindset and a confident approach to learning. I enjoy working with students of all ability levels, from key stage 3 to early university, and goals assist them in attaining their goals, taking a two-pronged approach to grow their understanding of the subject and provide practical advice on their exam technique and what to prioritise in their revision and preparation for the best results.

My lessons are typically organised in 1-hour slots split into several sessions to help maintain focus, conducted online with the help of an online whiteboard so I recommend my students have access to a tablet or graphics tablet to write with. Beginning with a recap of the areas identified in the previous session and reviewing assigned work consolidate knowledge, then proceeding to work through the session’s chosen topics with a discussion of the content then working through a selection of questions increasing steadily in difficulty from within the student’s comfort zone to unconventional applications combined with other topics. After every lesson I provide actionable feedback on specific weak areas and can provide custom questions targeting these if desired.

I primarily provide regular tutoring with a continuous following over longer time frames but am open to teaching last minute preparation for exams or intensive short-term courses e.g. for students seeking some serious progress over a holiday period. I also teach university entrance exams, interviews, mathematics competitions and a range of university mathematics topics. I provide additionally give free support between lessons via email to ensure you are never stuck and keep good logs with which to give parents regular progress reports.
