About Sam

Hello, my name is Sam Penney and I am an experienced tutor who offers personalized 1-on-1 and group lessons. I believe that every student is unique, and I adapt my teaching approach to the ideas, concerns, and perspectives of my students and their families.

I'm a clinical medical student working in Wairau hospital. I love mountain biking, surfing, hiking, tennis and squash. Over the last year I converted out a small van into a camper and love to build my own furniture around the house.

About the lesson

Approach to Tutoring: In our first session, we will have a friendly introduction and assessment of the student's abilities and goals. If appropriate, we can also liaise with the student's teachers. From there, depending on the number of sessions per week, we set 5- and 10-week goals guided by the student and family. Whilst we have goals and a lesson plan my lessons are super relaxed and aimed at placing students with low confidence or self-esteem at ease.

Typical Length of a Lesson: My 1-on-1 lessons are 1 hour long and cost $30 per lesson. Weekly lessons start with a recap of the previous week's work, usually taking around 20 minutes. I don't introduce a new skill until the previous one has been fully understood. Therefore, I set 5 x 15-minute homework tasks to complete on separate days before the next session.

In my experience, students perform best in groups of three. These group lessons are typically 90 minutes long and cost $70 per lesson. In group lessons, the homework tasks are set in groups, and students are required to teach each other small skills, encouraging them to take control of their own learning. The goal is my role to move from being a teacher to a facilitator and, eventually, to step back altogether.

Qualifications/Experience: I have 7 years of experience tutoring students at various levels and have a proven track record of helping students improve their grades and gain a deeper understanding of their subjects.
