High schoolers through MBAs: let's go deep on finance! Non-finance students: If your school ignores financial literacy, you're not alone. Less than 1/4 of US high school students had guaranteed access to a "FinLit" course by graduation in 2022. If financial literacy is available at your school, that's great! I hope you're taking advantage. Still, most courses are pretty surface-level, covering the bare bones of budgeting, saving, credit and taxes. The approach is often one-size-fits-all, and content can even be out-of-date or downright biased. Just like you can become literate in Spanish by filling out lots of grammar worksheets, filling out fake tax forms and credit card applications might get you financially literate—but it certainly won't make you fluent. And just like a good grade in Spanish doesn't guarantee you'll be able to navigate a Latin American city—let alone have a lively conversation, appreciate song lyrics, or flirt with your crush in Spanish—an A+ in financial literacy probably doesn't mean you're all set for adulting—let alone financially fluent enough to start your own company, manage your own investments, or decide which candidate's tax plan aligns with your values. Finance students: Truly grasping finance requires more than just memorizing the seemingly endless terminology. In fact if you approach it like a test prep cramming exercise, it won't work. I will encourage you to immerse yourself in finance practitioners media: the Financial Times, industry podcasts, earnings calls and shareholder letters. Using Excel and good business sense, we can cut through the jargon and theory and get to the essence of what makes finance add up.
