About Ruth
- What kind of experience do you have? I began flute at the age of six and achieved Grade 8 with merit aged twelve. I have Grade 5 Theory of Music and an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Diploma in Flute Performing. I was principal flute in the Lancashire Students' Concert Band from 2003 – 2005. With the band I toured France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland. I was also Principal flute with the University of Nottingham Sinfonia Orchestra. I studied under Jennifer Hutchinson of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Emer McDonagh of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as well as Lynda Coffin, Anna Noakes, Wissam Boustany and Julian Coward of Trinity College of Music. I have undertaken master classes with William Bennett and Robert Winn. I won first prize in the Harold Clarke woodwind competition for first year students at Trinity College of Music. I was Principal flute in the Trinity College Symphony Orchestra on several occasions and soloist with the Trinity Sinfonia at various times. I played flute in The Camden Chamber Orchestra in 2010. I was part of 'Eudaimonia' (flute, voice, soprano) and performed in various venues in London. I was also in the 'Sark Trio' (flute, guitar, viola) and undertook various performances including at the prestigious venue King's Place, central London. I have organised flute recitals for charity at St Martin's College Chapel, Lancaster. These have been in aid of Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Fund at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and JMV Volunteers in Tanzania. I also planned performances at Waltham Abbey and played flute on a professional solo artists' recording. I am available and have experience performing for weddings. I recently performed solo at the Priory Church in Lancaster and played the piccolo for the Haffner Orchestra. I have several plans for 2020. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? I have an updated one for my Music Therapy work. - Where and with whom did you train? I have been learning since I was six and have studied with various tutors. Whilst at Trinity College of Music I had lessons with Emer McDonough (Principal of the Royal Philharmonic), Julian Coward (Royal Philharmonic), Wissam Boustany, Anna Noakes and Lynda Coffin. Before then I learnt with Jen Hutchinson (BBC Philharmonic). The most important thing I learnt from all these teachers was to treat my students as individuals, and teach in the way that is best for each person. - Do you belong to any professional organisations? British Association of Music Therapy Health Care Professions Council - Tell me about some of your current students. My main work is Music Therapy based, but I recently taught some adult students. I loved seeing them and experiencing their enthusiasm for the flute :)

I believe everybody has musicality inherent within them and I want to help nurture and develop this with each student that I work. - Which subject(s) do you teach? Flute - Tell me about your qualifications. I have a First Class Honours degree in flute performance from Trinity College of Music and an MA in Music Therapy. I have a flute performance Dip ABRSM. I have Grade five theory and play the piano. - How much do you charge? I charge £30 per hour and £15 for half an hour. - Where do you teach? I teach from my home in Lancaster. - When are you available? TBC - Which ages and levels do you teach? I teach all levels and ages. I especially like to encourage adults who may have played flute in the past, or who want to take up a new hobby! I am happy to pursue group lessons if you have children who might like to play together. I think this is important to encourage ensemble playing. I have much experience working with people with special needs and would be very happy to take on students with any additional needs. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? I am happy to teach Grade examinations. I also like to allow my students to lead a little by telling me what they want to learn as I think the motivation needs to come from within. - Do you have a personal message for students? Each one of us has a unique personality and musicality. I will help you to develop confidence, enjoy the flute and seek to share and nurture your inherent gifts and talent.

After losing my Mum I wanted to learn a musical instrument, flute was always an instrument I loved the sound of. Although I had learnt a little bit of Piano as a child I had forgotten all my music etc.
Ruth made me feel very relaxed... She was friendly and kind. It took me quite a while to be able to get a sound from my flute but Ruth was so patient and encouraging to me.
