About Ryan
Hi, I'm Ryan, a native American English speaker from the West Coast of the US. I've been tutoring for many years, and I earned my B.S. from Portland State University with a minor in English.
I also spent several years working in tech as a developer and coding instructor. Much of that work involved talking with clients, and I often acted as the go-between for engineers and non-technical people, explaining complex ideas in clear, simple language. That experience shapes how I help my students today.
I bring patience, preparation, and a genuine interest in each student's goals to every lesson.

My teaching method
I help students sound natural and confident when they speak. We work on pacing, rhythm, intonation, and the everyday phrases native speakers use to organize their thoughts. When you make a mistake, I point it out right away and show you how a native speaker would say it, so you can hear the difference and use it next time.
A typical lesson
All of my classes are tailored to each student and their specific goals. We may start by chatting about your week or your work. Then we might move into a focused activity, such as explaining something technical, practicing for a meeting or interview, or working on a piece of writing. When something comes up that needs work, we practice it right then until it feels natural.
What sets me apart
I've been tutoring for years, including before and after my time working in tech. I know what it's like to sit in standups, talk to clients, and interview for jobs in the industry, and I can help you prepare for those situations with the language people actually use.
Who my lessons are for
Intermediate and advanced adult learners, especially people working in tech or business who want to speak more naturally at work. I also help students of any background with creative and technical writing. (I especially love fantasy, sci-fi, and history!)
