About Katie
My background in classical Latin has shaped my understanding of language. When you truly understand how synthetic (inflected) language works, you have the necessary foundation to see clearly that, contrary to common belief and teaching methods, the English language is not a collection of exceptions that must be memorized. There are rules and order to English grammar, and it is always a far easier task to learn and apply consistent rules and patterns than to try to memorize a million exceptions. Not only that, but grammar actually creates meaning; it is not arbitrary. I've spent my entire life as a student and as a teacher building a deep understanding of how language works and how to teach it effectively. To write clearly is to think clearly, and it all starts with a strong foundation. A trend has emerged in the last few decades of pushing students to run before they can walk, so to speak, when it comes to writing. Mastering a language is a process of exponential growth, but if the foundation is not solid, everything else becomes guesswork. I consider myself an expert in teaching the foundation. Just as Picasso mastered realism before he began to experiment with breaking those rules and inventing a style all his own, we must build confidence in and mastery of spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, rhetoric, syllogism, and argument construction in order to develop more complex writing style. With facility comes freedom!

I'm a firm believer that until you can explain a concept simply, you don't fully understand it. I bring this approach to my classroom and tutoring. I've consistently found that when students are putting forth genuine, consistent effort but failing to get results, there are one or more key bases of knowledge or skill lacking. One-on-one coaching makes all the difference when the teacher can identify what those gaps are specifically and address them in ways that capitalize on the student's learning style while challenging them to simply start doing the things they've come to believe they can't do. All it takes is a taste of success for that student's confidence to begin growing, and as his/her confidence in approaching the hard tasks grows, so do both enjoyment and mastery. Helping students find the love of learning things they thought they were "bad" at is one of the greatest joys of my career. I was given that gift as a student by my teachers, andI absolutely love to pay that forward. Learning is a pleasure we never outgrow and can always access, no matter our life stage or current circumstances.
