About Ashley

I am an experienced English teacher and admissions specialist with over 16 years’ teaching and tutoring experience, working with students from primary level through to university and adult education.

My background includes:

Cambridge ESOL-accredited teacher
Postgraduate study to PhD level in History
University teaching experience, including undergraduate seminars
Former Senior Examiner for the British Council
Experience managing entrance-exam assessments for leading schools in China
Extensive experience teaching students from the UK and internationally

My teaching starts from a simple principle: effective tutoring should be genuinely individual.

Students often come to private tuition because a classroom environment cannot fully accommodate their particular strengths, gaps or learning style. I therefore begin by assessing what a student can already do, identifying the areas that will make the greatest difference, and designing a programme around the individual rather than imposing a standard course.

I combine clear explanation, modelling and guided practice with questioning that develops independent thinking. Difficult skills are broken into manageable components so that students can experience improvement quickly; support is then gradually withdrawn as confidence and independence develop. We regularly revisit previous learning so that knowledge and skills are not simply understood during a lesson, but retained and transferable to unfamiliar tasks.

My manner is warm, patient and encouraging, but academically ambitious. Some students need their confidence rebuilt; others are already high achievers who need to be challenged beyond what they are currently doing at school. I particularly enjoy working with students who have become frustrated with English and helping them discover that they are capable of considerably more than they thought.

Lessons include plenty of discussion, challenges, games and varied activities alongside rigorous academic work. I am also happy to mark work between lessons and provide parents with clear feedback on progress.

I specialise in 11+ and 13+ English and competitive school admissions, with experience across 8+, 9+, 10+, 11+, 12+, 13+ and 16+ entry.

Students I have taught have gained admission to schools including St Paul’s, Hampton, Winchester College, Abingdon and St Mary’s Ascot.

My aim is not simply to teach students how to pass a particular entrance paper. I develop the reading, writing and higher-order thinking skills they will need both to gain admission and to thrive in a demanding academic environment afterwards.

Admissions preparation can include:

Creative writing — practical, repeatable processes for generating ideas and producing sophisticated description and narrative
Comprehension — inference, vocabulary, close reading and analysis of writers' techniques
Persuasive and discursive writing — constructing and developing convincing arguments
Critical thinking — reasoning, interpretation and responding intelligently to unfamiliar material
SPaG and vocabulary — identifying and addressing individual weaknesses as they arise
Exam technique — time management, planning and approaching unfamiliar or demanding questions
Pre-tests and assessments — including ISEB, UKiset, CEM, CAT4 and SATs

Because leading schools often use their own distinctive assessment formats, generic 11+ preparation is not always sufficient. Where appropriate, I create bespoke practice questions and papers reflecting the demands of a student's target schools, together with model responses and explicit teaching of the underlying skills.

Interview preparation

I also provide school interview coaching.

We practise both common admissions questions and the more unexpected questions that selective schools use to explore how candidates think. Rather than scripting answers or putting words into a student's mouth, I teach students how to develop an idea, justify an opinion, think critically and express themselves naturally and confidently.

The goal is for the interviewer to meet the student at their best—not to hear a rehearsed adult answer.

International students

As a Cambridge ESOL-accredited teacher, I am trained to teach students for whom English is an additional language and have taught students from around the world. This is particularly useful for international applicants preparing for UK-school admissions, where strong academic ability may need to be combined with targeted development of English comprehension, writing and spoken confidence.
