Having achieved a postgraduate degree in education, I have formally studied learning principles and theory in depth. With thirty years teaching experience in different countries, student cohorts and teaching contexts, I have applied those principles in both exciting and challenging situations.

I have chosen examples related to my experience teaching the Adult Migrant Education class in Devonport, Tasmania, in 2016. This class consists of five different nationalities and has three levels, Certificate 1 to Certificate 3.

When new students arrive in class a proficiency test, ISLPR, is applied. An entry score based around ASCF levels places the student in the suitable CSWE level. I note the student’s prior knowledge, confidence level, cultural differences, learning styles and specific assistance required. With consideration of each student, I then plan an introductory theme of ‘Who am I’. The identity theme is interpreted appropriately between Certificate levels and the chosen modules. Within each level the task was supported by practicing the core skills along with cueing or prompting, questioning, modeling, telling and discussing.

In one of the related activities the students prepared and presented a dish from their country in a ‘Harmony Day’ event, highlighting their cultural background and knowledge. To promote cross cultural exchange, another TasTAFE class was invited to join this celebration. Around this activity I used confidence building team activities, conversation and discussion practice in pair and group work, individual activities on the computer and independent research work on the internet. Each certificate and module had a particular outcome based around the theme.

The feedback from the migrant students and the other TasTAFE class involved, revealed there was a greater understanding of one another; the migrants felt more confident socially and showed improvement in their conversation skills. This approach helped students to be independent and comfortable advancing to a higher English level.
