About Joy

I am Joy, a high school Chemistry tutor and A' Level Chemistry examiner. I teach because I have the natural skill to explain difficult concepts in the language that even a child would understand. Many students have phobia for Chemistry. I chose to teach Chemistry because I want to prove to students that Chemistry concepts are interesting and can be understood. Therefore, I am on a mission to bring home the knowledge of Chemistry. I deploy different tools in my lessons depending on my learner's learning style. This implies that my lessons are differentiated to incorporate my learner's uniqueness. Some of the tools I use to design engaging and interactive lessons are: slides, videos, PhET simulations, Kahoot, PDFs, Google Docs and forms, etc. My students always enjoy my class even as they pass their exams.

I have prepared students for Checkpoint Science, IGCSE, WASCCE, JAMB exams with outstanding results. I design my lessons depending on my students' learning styles. I use slides, videos, PhET simulations to engage my students. I also use Kahoot, Google Docs, forms and worksheets for collaboration and assessment. I use Google Classroom to organize and track my student's progress. My lessons are usually 1 hr per lesson. However, for exam preparations we may choose 1 hr 30 minutes. My lessons are for primary, middle school and high school students.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    1. I developed an interest in Chemistry during my secondary school years. I noticed that many of my classmates understood Chemistry concepts better when I explained them after they had struggled to understand the teacher’s explanation. Seeing them finally grasp difficult topics gave me a sense of fulfilment and made me realise I had a natural ability to teach and simplify complex ideas.
My interest in private tutoring developed after university when I began teaching professionally. Over time, I discovered that one of my strengths is the ability to relate scientific concepts to familiar everyday experiences and examples. Many of my students become excited when they realise that concepts they once found difficult are actually connected to real-life situations around them. Watching students gain confidence and enjoy learning has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey as a tutor.

This experience inspired me to extend my teaching beyond my immediate physical environment so that more students could have access to engaging, supportive, and effective Chemistry tutoring.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    2. Chemistry is a fascinating subject because it helps students understand the science behind everyday life. From cooking and cleaning products to respiration, medicines, and industrial processes, students often become more engaged when they realise that Chemistry is connected to real-life experiences around them. I also enjoy the experimental aspect of the subject because practical activities and demonstrations make lessons more interactive and memorable for students.

Some areas of Chemistry, however, can feel abstract to learners, especially topics such as atomic structure, orbitals, and the historical development of atomic theory. These concepts are not always easy for students to visualise, so I enjoy using simulations, diagrams, analogies, and relatable examples to make them more understandable and engaging.

One of the things I enjoy most as a tutor is designing lessons with the right teaching strategies for different learners. I particularly enjoy teaching topics such as electronic configuration, acid-base indicators, organic chemistry, and chemical reactions because students often gain confidence quickly once the concepts are properly explained.

While I naturally enjoy some topics more than others, I see every area of Chemistry as an opportunity to help students overcome difficulties and build a deeper understanding of the subject.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    3. Yes, I have had teachers and educators who greatly influenced my journey as both a student and a tutor.

One of my earliest role models was my Igbo Language teacher during secondary school. She inspired me to always strive for excellence in whatever I choose to do. What stood out to me was not only her deep knowledge of her subject, but also the confidence, passion, and mastery with which she taught. Watching her made me appreciate the impact a dedicated teacher can have on students.

Another major influence has been Tyler DeWitt. His educational videos inspired me to venture into online tutoring and helped shape the way I explain scientific concepts. Through his teaching style, I learned the importance of using simple language, relatable examples, visuals, and engaging explanations to make complex ideas easier for students to understand.

More importantly, his work made me realise that teaching can go beyond the walls of a classroom and reach students globally. The impact his videos had on my own learning experience and indirectly on my students through the methods I adopted, motivated me to believe that I, too, could positively influence students beyond my immediate environment.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    4. A good tutor needs a combination of strong subject knowledge, effective communication skills, patience, and the ability to understand different learning needs.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    5. Anecdote: One memorable experience from my teaching was when I taught a student the topic of carboxylic acids and esters. After the lesson, I gave him an online quiz on Wayground to assess his understanding.
When he told me he had submitted it, I checked but could not find his name. Instead, I saw a submission under the name “Propanoate.” When I asked him about it, he smiled and confirmed it was his work.

It was a light-hearted moment, but it showed me that he was engaged with the topic and confident enough to connect Chemistry to what he was learning. It reminded me that when students enjoy a subject, they learn more meaningfully.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    6. One challenge I have faced in Chemistry is explaining abstract concepts such as orbitals and atomic structure in ways students can easily understand. As a tutor, I have learned to overcome this by using simulations, visual aids, and relatable real-life examples to make lessons more engaging and understandable
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    7. Yes, I have a strong passion for teaching, especially helping students understand concepts they once found difficult or impossible to learn. In Chemistry, I particularly enjoy simplifying complex topics and relating them to real-life situations so that students can see the subject as meaningful, practical, and interesting.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions) ?

.8. What makes me a Superprof is my ability to simplify difficult concepts, adapt to different learning styles, and create engaging lessons that help students gain confidence in Chemistry. I am passionate about helping students truly understand what they are learning, not just memorise content, and I always strive to make lessons supportive, interactive, and relatable.
