About Emily

Hi, I’m Emily! I’m a student at Durham University studying Psychology and Philosophy, alongside an English module in my first year.

Having achieved an A* in A-Level English Literature, English has always been a subject I genuinely love and something I’m passionate about sharing with others.

I grew up surrounded by younger family members and have always enjoyed helping and teaching children. I have experience supporting younger children with reading as well as teaching swimming, hockey and cadets; which has taught me how important patience, encouragement and confidence are when learning something new. I hope to make English enjoyable and approachable, particularly for children who may lack confidence in the subject.

Outside of academics, I love hockey, running and fitness, as well as spending time outdoors. I’m also an avid reader, particularly of thrillers, and enjoy writing my own short stories and poetry.

Teaching is something I would love to pursue in the future, and tutoring gives me the opportunity to share my enthusiasm for English while helping younger students develop their own skills, confidence and hopefully a love for the subject too!

About the lesson

My lessons are friendly, engaging and tailored to each child’s age, ability and individual needs. I use a mixture of reading, comprehension activities, creative writing, vocabulary and grammar exercises, keeping lessons interactive and encouraging rather than overly formal. For older students, I can also introduce essay-writing and analytical skills.

Lessons typically last 45–60 minutes, with shorter activities and variety to help younger students stay focused and engaged.

I achieved an A* in A-Level English Literature and have previous experience working with children, including helping younger children with reading and teaching swimming. These experiences have helped me develop patience, communication skills and an understanding of how to explain things in a clear and encouraging way.

My lessons are aimed at children aged approximately 7–15, whether they need extra support with English, want to improve their reading and writing, or simply want to build their confidence in the subject.
