About Jonathan

Let me tell you a bit about myself, so you know the perspective I'm bringing to the class. My name’s Jonathan Hale, and I’m a graduate of the New York Film Academy (NYFA), Class of 2018. I’ve spent a lot of time in the trenches of screenwriting, both as a student and a working writer, and I’m excited to share the knowledge I’ve gained from those experiences with you. At NYFA, I got hands-on experience writing, directing, and producing short films, and I’ve worked on a range of projects from indie films to more commercial scripts. Since graduating, I’ve been honing my craft writing feature-length scripts, collaborating with other filmmakers, and staying deeply connected to the industry. So when I teach, it’s all about blending theory with practical, real-world insights that will give you a deeper understanding of what works in screenwriting and why. Having been through the process of developing ideas, refining drafts, and facing all the challenges that come with writing for the screen, I understand the ups and downs of the journey. My goal in this class is to give you the tools to navigate your own path as a screenwriter whether you're aiming to pitch your scripts to agents, write your own films, or just develop a stronger storytelling voice. I’ve been in your shoes, and I know what it’s like to write, rewrite, and eventually get something to the point where it feels just right. We’ll take a hands-on, supportive approach in this class, where you’ll get to grow and experiment with your writing, while also learning the technical aspects of screenwriting. It’s all about helping you build confidence and refining your craft in ways that make your stories stand out.

In this screenwriting course, we’ll start by getting familiar with the basic rules and structure of a screenplay. In our first lesson, we'll dive into the format, the language of screenwriting, and the standard three-act structure that most movies follow. You'll learn how to make your scripts look professional and readable, which is super important when you're working in the industry.

Then, we’ll focus on creating great characters. We’ll talk about how to make your characters feel real and how to give them compelling dialogue that reflects their personalities and drives the story forward. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to craft dialogue that isn’t just about what’s being said, but what’s being unsaid, that’s where the magic happens.

Once we have our characters and dialogue down, we’ll move on to plot. You’ll learn how to build a story that keeps an audience hooked. We’ll break down different storytelling frameworks, like the three-act structure and the hero’s journey, so you can decide what works best for your script. You’ll end up outlining your own story, figuring out where the key moments happen and how your character changes through the course of the plot.

We’ll also explore the idea of conflict and tension, which are the lifeblood of drama. In screenwriting, every scene should have some sort of tension that propels the story forward, whether it's between characters or internal struggles. We'll study how to build conflict that feels natural and leads to those big moments of change and revelation.

A big part of screenwriting is being able to tell a story visually. It’s all about showing, not telling. So, in our next lesson, we’ll focus on how to describe actions and settings that help tell the story without overloading the page with unnecessary details or dialogue. You’ll learn to use the visual medium of film to your advantage, making the audience see what you're imagining on the screen.

By this point, you’ll have the tools to write your very own short screenplay. We'll spend time developing and refining your ideas, making sure your script has a clear beginning, middle, and end. This will be a chance to apply everything you’ve learned, from character development to structure to dialogue. We’ll workshop these scripts in class, giving you feedback from both your peers and me to make your work even stronger.

Finally, we’ll talk about the business side of screenwriting, how to pitch your script, how to approach agents, and what happens once you’re ready to start submitting your work. You’ll also practice writing a pitch, including a logline and a brief synopsis that will hook people into wanting to read your script.

The course will culminate in a final workshop where you'll receive constructive feedback on your completed scripts and have a chance to revise based on that feedback. By the end, you’ll have a finished short screenplay, polished and ready to show off, and the knowledge of what it takes to take your work from draft to submission.

Throughout the course, we’ll be focused on writing, revising, and giving each other feedback in a supportive environment, so you can grow as a writer and find your voice as a screen storyteller.
