About Kirk
I am a mixed Black man, that values faith and family above all else. From there, community is built, from an equitable lens, wherein trust, honesty, compassion, respect, and transparency can thrive in the light of vulnerability and altruism.
This is how I was an effective English teacher in Chile and Egypt, and a simple formula of respect and care produces results beyond our imagination.
I have an eclectic background, but it all revolves around education, self-care, and community development. I studied communication and philosophy at Saint John's University, where I worked, alongside the Institute of Women's Leadership, at the Men's Development Institute for three years before graduating, and being sent abroad as an ESL teacher. Since then, my empathy has deepened immensely, rendering me an increased capacity to meet folks where they are at, one question at a time.
All aforementioned considered, I have excelled working as a lobbyist at the Minnesota Capitol, where I represent communities and coalitions, advocating for communities, workforce development, justice, and a chance at the good life for all. Crabs in the barrel is the old way; now, we have a chance to empower our youth to fight for what's most important to them. This is how the education system will change: from within, valuing teachers more than ever, and empowering students to pursue their passions, rather than be judged by their capacity to fit an antiquated and unsupportive mold that merely produces unhappy worker bees. When you empower bees to be themselves, the world is healthier and happier.
I hope that I have the chance to work with you!

I'm a multiracial individual with English as my first language; no one in my immediate family speaks anything other than English, but while teaching English in Egypt, the Egyptians taught me, "language is a treasure." Due to this lesson, I have learned several languages, and I deeply value educational opportunities in language (this is, in high school how the seed was sown which taught me to recognize my own genius). Teaching people to recognize their own genius is a special gift to give, and one that will help us heal our world.
Since implementing these lessons, I have taught English and Spanish all around the world. Above all else, I believe that language creates our reality. So, to teach someone how to learn creatively, and express themselves in novel and unique ways is to open up new worlds for our communities, one person at a time!
I create curriculum from scratch on an individual-basis, taking into consideration each person's background, educational history, and means of self-expression. From there, I accentuate their strengths, while sensitively encouraging growth from areas that could use more support. Primarily, I focus on English and Spanish writing, reading, auditory capacity, and verbal skills. No one need be given a voice; rather, a good teacher knows how to encourage, build confidence, and hold the microphone up for others so that students can begin sharing their gift(s) with the world. Additionally, a great teacher knows how and when to 1) lead or follow, and 2) the value of silence in the learning process.
Whether you choose to ask me for my support, or someone else, I wish you and your early-learners all the best. Proverbs 27:17 & James 1:2 are a few verses that have helped me along my path. Be well, and stay positive!
With respect and gratitude,
KJ
