About Maia
I have worked since 2015 as a public speaking and debate coach for students from the ages of seven to 16, whilst being a competitor myself. I have also worked as a volunteer cultural aid navigator for a refugee family in my hometown, teaching young children English through play and discussion.
As a speech and debate coach, I have worked with several students who are learning English is their second language. I have helped my students with reading, writing and speaking tasks. My first year as an ESL tutor, all of my students earned medals as top speakers at the Oregon Speech and Debate state championship tournament.

I speak four languages myself, two of which I learned in the classroom before speaking with native speakers. I have a unique understanding of different cultural backgrounds and great empathy for those who are studying a new language. I have experience teaching English to children as young as two and as old as 16. However, I can also tutor adults.
A typical lesson with me will look different depending on the age and goals of the student and their family. All of my lessons are based on a language immersion approach where I will speak fully in English and use context clues and hand gestures to help my students understand me.
Regardless of your age, I will work with you to meet your goals. If you want to become a better speaker, I will act as a conversation partner who teaches you about the nuances of the English language. If you have a test to study for or a paper to write, I will work with you on that.
I am very flexible as an educator and strive to best accommodate their individual needs and goals as English language learners.
