I firmly believe in teaching through the communicative approach, as I believe students learn better through authentic conversation and interactions. Through my experience as an English teacher at the UVIC ELC, I employ a wide range of group activities and I believe that students learn best when they are encouraged to teach and express themselves.
A usual lesson with me begins with a warm up activity to get the students primed in English, followed by an introduction of the day’s activities, including new grammatical functions, projects and presentations, etc. I make sure the each activity and lesson flows into the next and that grammar scaffolds from class to class.
I believe that I bring a strong understand of TESL pedagogy through my studies at UVIC as well as experience working as a student teacher and chief cultural assistant at the UVIC English Learning Centre. I’ve spent lots of time with English learners of all backgrounds from beginners to near-fluent college students, and I am comfortable teaching students of all levels.
