About Sam
Since entering high school, I have been devoted to helping students maximize their potential by instilling confidence and providing them with the concrete, problem-solving skills they need to succeed. For me, this means meeting students where they are, and learning as much about what they as an individual need to make progress. This means contacting teachers and parents when appropriate in order to ensure that each student knows that he or she is being genuinely heard, and tutored in a way that best matches his or her specific needs. This devotion manifested in me running my high school’s peer-to-peer tutoring program which allowed me to not only tutor students, but pair up others in order to increase the number of those who could be helped. I have since worked as a tutor for the Columbia University Statistics Department, as well as tutoring for college test prep and working for several independent tutoring companies, teaching math and science up to and including college-level courses. In each case, I have prioritized methods that allow students to reach their own conclusions and discover new skills for themselves, so as to propel them forward, ready to take on whatever course or test they’re preparing for.

Very collaborative, with lessons tailored to the specific learning methods of each student. All young learners learn in their own way, so above all, it’s crucial to meet students where they are, not only as students, but as humans with a range of interests and passions. Connecting on a human level and establishing mutual trust is necessary to any successful tutoring relationship, which is why I prioritize this with all my students. Unless mutual trust is established, students will not feel comfortable asking for help when they need it, and if I cannot help students feel comfortable asking questions, I have failed as a tutor.
