About Derek
I started playing guitar when I was 9 years old (about 30 years ago), and have been devoted to the instrument ever since. I graduated Hobart college having won the D'Angelo Award for music, having mostly focused on theory and composition. Since then, I have played and wrote for numerous bands, gigging, touring, recording, and honing my craft. Over this time, I have been teaching guitar privately, teaching students of all backgrounds. The core of my teaching philosophy is that learning music should be an enriching and positive experience, so you can expect lessons that are respectful and encouraging.

I tailor my lessons to each student, prioritizing your goals and direction, while offering enough aside from that to keep your playing and understanding well balanced. If your goal is to learn how to play a metal solo, we will not only go over the notes, but the associated techniques and theory so that you can develop mastery of everything you learn.
I've taught students at all levels of playing for over a decade, and am as happy teaching brand new beginners as I am teaching long time players.
