About Toby

I am currently a Head of Classics with over 12 years of teaching experience, specialising in Latin and Classical Civilisation. My academic journey began with studying Classics at school, where I developed a strong fascination with the ancient world, particularly its literature, mythology, history and culture. That early interest has grown into a long-term career dedicated to helping students engage with and succeed in these subjects.

Alongside my teaching, I run Mr Hinde’s Classics Channel on YouTube, where I create resources and videos designed to support students’ understanding of the ancient world. This has allowed me to extend my teaching beyond the classroom and share my enthusiasm for Classics with a wider audience.

I enjoy tutoring because it allows for a more individualised approach to learning. I particularly value the opportunity to tailor explanations, build confidence and support students in developing both their subject knowledge and exam technique in a focused and supportive environment.

Outside of Classics, I enjoy music, camping and exploring historical sites. I find that these interests often connect back to my love of the ancient world, particularly when visiting places of historical significance or reflecting on the cultures that continue to shape our understanding of the past.

My aim as a tutor is to provide clear, structured and engaging support that helps students achieve their academic goals while also developing a genuine appreciation for the subject.

About the lesson

I am a Head of Classics with over 12 years of teaching experience, specialising in Latin and Classical Civilisation. I have taught across GCSE, A-Level and IB specifications and have extensive experience supporting students of all abilities, from those building confidence and securing passes to high-achieving students aiming for top grades and competitive university applications, including Oxbridge preparation.

I hold 2 Classics degrees (BA & Masters). Alongside my classroom experience I have 4 years of private tuition experience.

My approach to tutoring is structured, supportive and highly tailored to the individual student. I begin by identifying strengths and areas for development, then adapt lessons to focus on the specific skills required for success in examinations. In Latin, this includes grammar, syntax, vocabulary acquisition, translation skills and unseen translation practice. In Classical Civilisation, I focus on developing clear analytical writing, precise use of evidence and strong essay technique.

I place a strong emphasis on understanding exam requirements and teaching students how to approach questions strategically, not just content knowledge. Where appropriate, I also set targeted follow-up tasks to reinforce learning between sessions.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes in length, although longer sessions can be arranged where appropriate, particularly for exam preparation or intensive revision periods. I deliver all lessons on Google Meet and share resources using Google Classroom.

Alongside my teaching role, I also run Mr Hinde’s Classics Channel on YouTube, where I create educational content designed to support students’ understanding of the ancient world. This reflects my wider commitment to making Classical subjects engaging, accessible and academically rigorous.

My tutoring is suitable for:

- IB Latin
- University preparation and Oxbridge support
