About Nandini
As a dedicated math tutor, I am passionate about helping students build confidence in their mathematical abilities and develop strong problem-solving skills. I believe that math is not just about numbers but about logical thinking, creativity, and real-world applications. Through personalized tutoring sessions, I strive to make complex concepts more approachable by breaking them down into clear, step-by-step explanations that cater to each student’s learning style. I have experience tutoring students across various grade levels, from foundational arithmetic to algebra, geometry, and calculus. My approach emphasizes patience, interactive learning, and critical thinking, ensuring that students not only understand the material but also learn how to apply problem-solving techniques independently. Beyond tutoring, I enjoy finding ways to connect math to everyday life, making it more engaging and relevant for students. Whether through real-world examples, visual aids, or interactive problem-solving, I am committed to fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment.

Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Understand the importance of problem-solving strategies in mathematics.
Apply logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and critical thinking to solve problems.
Work collaboratively to develop different approaches to mathematical challenges.
Recognize the real-world applications of mathematical concepts.
Materials Needed:
Whiteboard and markers
Graph paper (if applicable)
Manipulatives (counters, algebra tiles, rulers, etc.)
Printed problem sets (varying in difficulty)
Graphing calculators (if necessary)
Lesson Structure:
1. Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes)
Begin with a simple math riddle or puzzle to engage students.
Example: "A farmer has 17 sheep, and all but 9 run away. How many are left?" (Answer: 9)
Discuss how different approaches (logical reasoning vs. computation) can help solve problems.
2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes)
Introduce problem-solving strategies, such as:
Breaking a problem into smaller parts
Looking for patterns
Using trial and error
Drawing diagrams or graphs
Logical reasoning (if-then thinking)
Provide an example problem and walk through multiple solution methods to show flexibility in mathematical thinking.
3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Divide students into small groups and assign them a real-world problem.
Example: "A store sells pencils for $0.50 each or a pack of 10 for $4. Which is the better deal?"
Encourage students to discuss their reasoning and explain their solutions.
4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)
Hand out individual problem sets of varying difficulty (word problems, equations, logic puzzles).
Have students apply at least two different strategies to solve the problems.
Circulate and assist as needed, asking guiding questions to encourage deeper thinking.
5. Wrap-Up & Assessment (5-10 minutes)
Discuss solutions as a class, emphasizing different approaches and what worked best.
Ask students to reflect: "Which strategy did you find most helpful?"
Exit Ticket: Provide a short problem and ask students to explain their thought process in writing.
Assessment & Reflection:
Formative: Observe participation in discussions and group work.
Summative: Evaluate problem-solving strategies in worksheets and exit tickets.
Reflection: Encourage students to identify real-life situations where they can apply these problem-solving techniques.
