About Kiva
I have 9 years of experience teaching Computer Programming, Game Design, Minecraft Modding with Java, and other similar introductory programming courses. I've worked for Digital Media Academy, TechLX, and KidzToPros as an instructor and curriculum developer for their robotics, game design, Roblox, and Minecraft courses. I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2019 with a degree in Cognitive Science, and I started two robotics as a student there. I'm also a visual artist, graphic designer, and musician. I know from experience that a great creative project can inspire a life-long love of coding, and I hope to provide that opportunity to my students.

Hello, my name is Kiva. I've been teaching Game Design and Intro to Computer Science for 9 years. I'm comfortable working with students ages 12 and up. I've been assisting novice and intermediate coders from all different backgrounds and careers to either make games, learn the basics of Python and Java, or both.
If you or a loved one have always been interested in computer science but never found a fun or creative way to get started, this is the class for you!
A typical lesson with me includes: an email with all necessary software requirements, and a link to the Zoom for the lesson itself. I use a mixture of slides for note taking, and exercises (or mini-projects) each lesson until the final two classes which are dedicated to finishing a larger project. For instance, we may start the day by defining what a programming language is, what a variable is and how to use it, and then end the day with some unstructured time meant for building something using those concepts.
My main goal as an instructor, depending on a students’ skill level, is for each student to demonstrate an understanding of the basics of object oriented programming, simple data structures, and game design.
I prefer to let the student guide the lessons to some degree: setting goals and defining a clear strategy to success, such as designing their own game, drawing their own sprites or characters, and defining what that finished product should look like before they even begin the project code. I'm here to guide, demonstrate concepts, and provide answers when needed, but I believe the creative and self-directed aspects of this tutorial are what make it more meaningful. Ideally, this is only the beginning of your coding journey, and projects you begin here may find their way into your professional portfolio long after this class is over. Of course, I also have many canned exercises and project ideas for those of you who may struggle from writer's block.
If there's another project or creative endeavor you can see my skills suited for tutoring you through, let me know! I’m more than happy to help even if it falls outside of the scope of Game Design, Java, or Python.
