About Stelios

I hold a Master of Arts from King's College London and have extensive experience in teaching Greek to non-native speakers - especially heritage learners - as well as teaching English as a second language.

In Greece, I am certified with 'eparkeia', a proficiency diploma from the University of Michigan, to teach English to Greek speakers. Since 2018, I have taught numerous students of diverse ages, nationalities, and backgrounds in mastering the Greek language.

Apart from teaching, I am an avid language enthusiast myself. Over the years, I have delved into 7 foreign languages, and I can also teach Greek to Spanish speakers.

Hello everyone! I hail from the island of Crete and I am a passionate modern Greek language tutor, offering engaging online classes tailored for adults and teenager learners seeking to master Greek as a foreign language.

From absolute beginners (A0-A1 level) to proficient speakers aiming at enhancing everyday communication, my classes revolve around each student's needs and objectives. The focus remains on fostering natural language proficiency (learning by doing), promoting continuous interaction in Greek, exploring culture (history, art, food, music, etc), and providing ongoing guidance for independent study.

I teach to all adult and teenage learners, individually or in groups. My teaching style combines a playful (yes, Greek can be challenging, but I'll ensure it's enjoyable!) yet structured methodology. I employ a rich array of grammar and syntax material, drawing from the best Greek learning textbooks and own resources. Sessions involve listening and speaking exercises, interactive dialogues, cognitive drills, working with articles, and, of course, work to do at home.

I'm always eager to connect and discuss your learning interests and requirements! Your first introductory class is complimentary.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Greek fluently because of my Greek nationality. I grew up in Crete, then studied in Patra and have been living abroad for the past 8 years.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I'd say one of my favourite Greek poets, Constantine Cavafy, is the perfect emblem of the beauties of the Greek language and literature.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

'Opa' is a very common expression in Greek. It is even well-known abroad, but you only realise how many different sentiments it expresses when you try to explain it to foreigners. It can mean so many things most of which are hard to translate: it can be used to express surprise (like 'wow!') or joy and celebration (like 'yeah!') or to say 'enough/stop', or to warn someone (like 'woah' or 'watch out'). All this and more meanings in a three-letter word depending on your body language and the way you pronounce 'opa'.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Because language is our origins, culture, emotions and expression. When I speak Greek with my students I feel like when you show your favourite movie to your friend and anxiously expect them to share your enthusiasm about it. Another reason why I like to speak Greek is because it is one of the oldest surviving languages in the world, carrying with it millennia of history.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

This is an easy one: Greek's unreasonably hard grammar. It is probably more common to come across exceptions in the rules than the rules themselves. With my students I try to take it little by little and avoid overexplaining complicated grammatical phenomena when we come across them, at the early stage of the learning process.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

At school, I had a really hard time learning Classical Greek. In Greece, it is an important subject all students learn at school (like Latin), however if modern Greek is a difficult language to learn, Classical Greek is twice as hard. There are several extra grammar rules and phenomena that make it seem almost like a new language. However, if you master it, it helps you master modern Greek even better, as modern Greek is the continuation/evolution of Classical Greek and the connection between the two is something unique.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I think traveling abroad generally makes you more aware of your own language than when you live at home. Learning other languages serves as a level of comparison and helps you understand the similarities or differences between languages and the feelings or cultural structures of the peoples. For me, for instance, living in Belgium helped me see the similarities with the French language, then in Spain I saw even more similarities between Greek and Spanish, however now that I live in the UK, it's the differences between English and Greek that strike me.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My passion for teaching Greek. I love not only to teach Greek, but also to share concepts such as Greek culture, music, art and history with my students.
