About Gustavo

¡Hola! My name is Gustavo, you can call me Gus. I'm a native Spanish speaker, originally from Peru. My journey brought me to Canada, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from UBC. While my professional background is in the sciences, my personal passion has always been in communication and the arts. As a polyglot myself, I have a deep appreciation for the process of learning a new language and I understand the challenges and rewards firsthand. When I'm not teaching or talking about science, you can usually find me with a guitar in my hands composing music, drawing, or heading out for a hike. I love connecting with people over shared interests, and I bring this same open, creative energy to my tutoring. I truly believe that learning should be an exciting process of discovery, and I look forward to sharing my language and culture with you!

- My Lesson My first and most important goal is to get to know you. Our initial sessions are dedicated to understanding your personality, interests, and specific goals with Spanish. From there, I craft a personalized lesson plan that acts as our starting point. This plan isn't set in stone; think of it as a living document that we will continuously build upon and tweak together, ensuring your lessons are always perfectly aligned with your progress and evolving needs. - My Teaching Methodology & Philosophy My teaching philosophy is simple: we start with a foundation of essential grammar, but the real magic happens when we connect the language directly to your life. My goal is to get you comfortable speaking Spanish quickly so you can have conversations, read with confidence, and get immersed in the Hispanic world through fun and casual practice. As a huge fan of music, one of my favorite techniques is sharing songs, exploring the lyrics together, and using them as a launchpad for real conversation. Think of me as your dedicated conversation buddy; for every lesson, we'll have topics tailored specifically to you, ensuring we always work at your pace. - A Typical Lesson Plan * Warm-up & Casual Conversation (5-10 minutes): We'll start with a relaxed chat in Spanish. * The Core Activity (20-25 minutes): This is where we dive into your interests! We might analyze song lyrics, discuss a recipe, describe a piece of art, your day, or explore a more niche topic. * Targeted Learning & Practice (15-20 minutes): Based on our activity, we'll identify and practice a key grammar point or new vocabulary set that came up naturally. * Review & "Mission" for the Week (5-10 minutes): We'll wrap up by reviewing what we learned and setting a fun, optional "mission" for the week. - What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor * An Authentic, Native Perspective: As a native speaker from Peru, I offer more than just textbook Spanish. I share the culture, the modern slang, the rhythm, and the nuances that make the language come alive as well as a perspective from other Spanish speaking countries. * A Polyglot's Empathy: I'm not just a teacher; I'm a fellow language learner. I’ve been in your shoes, and I understand the challenges and the triumphs. I bring that patience and understanding to every lesson. * Creative & Diverse Background: My passions for music (guitar, composing), art, and science allow me to connect with a wide range of students and make any topic an opportunity for learning.
- Who My Lessons Are For: These lessons are designed for curious individuals of any age who believe learning should be an engaging and enjoyable experience. I specialize in working with: * Beginners * Intermediate Learners * Travelers * Anyone seeking conversational practice
