About Melissa

Hi there, I'm so glad you've found me! I'm Melissa, an incoming medical student passionate about science and education. Before I start the next phase of my education, I want to utilize the knowledge I've gained during my undergraduate and graduate degrees to help others studying science. I received my Bachelor's degree in Public Health Science on the pre-med track from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2022, and then pursued my Master's Degree in Biology at Hofstra University, where I graduated in 2024. As someone who believes that learning is not one-size-fits-all, I feel that each student can benefit from a tutoring experience that caters to one's academic strengths and provides support in areas that can be improved. I feel that kindness is critical in providing an optimal educational experience, and as a daughter of two teachers, I have seen firsthand how far a little patience can go- especially when the material isn't clicking right away. It is my goal to foster an environment where my students can feel comfortable and heard, and that they are always made aware of the qualities that make them awesome, both as students and as people. When I'm not tutoring, I volunteer with the Crisis Text line, engage in biology and public health research, and work at a jewelry boutique. I love to travel the world, do makeup, and, as a self-proclaimed foodie, I enjoy chatting with friends over meals at new restaurants. About the lesson

As someone with a Master's degree in biology, I've been fortunate enough to have experienced so many areas of biological science. I have extensive lab work and a solid foundation in related sciences (ex: chemistry and physics) due to completing my pre-med coursework. These experiences have made me comfortable not only with knowing the material but with how to effectively study it, too. Being able to teach, but also being able to foster self-sufficiency in study habits amongst my students is what I believe allows me to contribute most positively to those I work with! I teach biology and biology-related subjects from the middle school level through the graduate level. Topics include IB/AP Bio, Regents Biology/Living Environment, Life Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Cellular/Molecular Biology, Ecology & Plant Sciences, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Virology, and Forensics. If you need help with a topic I haven't listed, you can always reach out, and I'll see if I can help! Before we meet, I'll ask you to send along the list of topics, the exam questions you want to review, homework questions, etc., at least 48 hours before our session. This will allow me to prepare content and explanations accordingly. In between sessions, you are welcome to ask any questions that may come up during the course of the week.
