About Jo

Hi! I’m Jiho (Jo for short), studying Psychology and Philosophy next academic year. I am an incoming undergraduate with experience tutoring multiple students for both 11+ and GCSE English. As a student who understands the stress behind these exams, I craft my lessons to be both engaging and personalised, making sure that you thrive in a secure learning environment whilst acquiring applicable skills.

I have recently graduated from Sevenoaks School having completed the IB Diploma, scoring 43/45 points including a 7 in Standard Level English Literature (equivalent to an A* at A levels). I have confirmed my place at the University of Oxford, set to study Psychology and Philosophy with a Masters in Psychology. I am particularly interested in developmental and educational psychology, prompting my pursuit of tutoring. Moreover, I achieved two A*s in GCSE English Language and iGCSE English Literature. I credit this to my genuine enjoyment of the subject, particularly in poetry analysis, as well as my love for reading.

As a tutor, I am dedicated to fostering independence and passion in my students through clear communication, as well as empathy and patience. I find it so rewarding to observe the growth in their confidence and abilities over time.

About the lesson

Lessons are typically 1 hour long, although this can always be adjusted. During each session, my students gain feedback and collaborative analysis on any prior tasks, begin a new text through detailed discussion, and finish by demonstrating understanding through independent analysis.

I first ensure that my student develops a strong understanding of a text and its question, using thorough discussion to consider many varied perspectives. By using a conversational method, my students can share and develop their own interpretations, which are then strengthened to target the main ideas that a question may present. Furthermore, I allow my students to grow confident in their analysis by having them explain their thought processes to me throughout the task. Despite this, I am always present to provide guidance when needed, preventing unproductive struggle. In the case of GCSE students, my top scoring essays can be used and analysed as exemplar models. This allows them to identify and adopt the techniques required to score highly in all assessment objectives. I take a methodical approach in establishing essay structures, enabling students to present their interpretations in a concise and academic format.

Whilst strengthening academic ability, I also aim to nurture enjoyment in the subject, as I believe that structural consistency in combination with passion is the key to flourishing. No level of ability is insufficient, so please do not hesitate to reach out!
