About Hanxiang

I am Han Xiang David Xu, an award-winning concert pianist, recording artist, international competition adjudicator, Steinway Young Artist, and piano educator based in Vancouver. I have performed across Canada, China, the UK, and Japan, and released two albums: Sonata on Canvas and Unattainable Illusion.

I trained at the Eastman School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Royal College of Music, where I completed a second master’s degree in Performance Science. My teaching combines international stage experience, competition insight, and a scientific approach to piano technique and movement.

I have adjudicated competitions including the Vivace International Piano Competition and the Hannover International Piano Competition. My students have won prizes in major competitions such as the Canadian Music Competition, and former students have been accepted into institutions including The Juilliard School, Leeds Conservatoire, and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

I teach classical piano to all levels, from beginners to advanced students preparing for exams, competitions, auditions, and music school applications.

My lessons help students play with more understanding, confidence, and freedom.

I teach classical piano to all levels, from complete beginners to advanced students preparing for exams, competitions, auditions, or performances. My approach is movement-based: instead of teaching technique as fixed finger patterns, I help students understand how the body, arms, hands, breathing, sound, and musical intention work together.

This is one of the biggest differences in my teaching is that I guide students from movement into music — using efficient, natural physical coordination to create better tone, clearer phrasing, greater control, and more expressive playing.

For beginners, this means building healthy habits from the start. For advanced students, it often means identifying the physical or technical habits that limit their sound, speed, confidence, or musical expression.

Every lesson is personalized. Whether your goal is to compete, audition, pass an exam, or simply enjoy playing beautifully, I will help you practice more intelligently, reduce unnecessary tension, and move forward with clarity, patience, and artistry.
