About Alex
I recently finished a Professor position at an elite university in San Diego and run my own science and education consultancy business. This allows me to continue working on my research as a scientist (I'm a huge penguin nerd and a member of the IUCN Specialists Group) while still working one-on-one with students to help them achieve their goals. I use this site as a way to get out of the "ivory tower" and my my work available to anyone more accessible way.
I have formal classroom experience with kids in the US third grade and through the Master's and PhD level at en elite university in San Diego. In addition to being an internationally-recognized scientist with expertise in marine and polar sciences, I completed graduate-level training in the principles of science teaching and outreach with the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I also hold a Master's in Marine Biodiversity & Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD. I work now primarily with international research teams and non-profits, but enjoy working with motivated students.
I have formal training in and/or have taught in the following areas (this is not a complete list): marine biology, natural sciences, chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, statistics, economics, biology, ecology, earth sciences, animal behavior, geology, microbiology, veterinary medicine, animal behavior, cell biology, anatomy, oceanography, law and policy, conservation science, genetics, botany. paleontology, communications, biodiversity, ethics, field practices, marine mammals, climate sciences, global climate change, traditional knowledge, Indigenous knowledge, governance, ecosystem management, non-profit, community development

I am happy to work with students older than 10-years, at any level of their career. Every student has the right to equitable access to and control over the direction of their own education, and I do everything in my power to ensure that this is possible in a way that meets learning goals. Before I begin lessons with any student, I work to understand their drive as well as their concerns to connect on a personal level in order to tailor curriculum to their specific needs.
In terms of the actual lesson, I start by coming up with clearly defined, demonstrable learning goals for what foundational knowledge I want students to takeaway at the end. I then size up the situational factors to ensure significant learning experiences (e.g., Fink's Taxonomy) for the targeted audience. Once my lesson has been outlined and I have an understanding of what mastery of a lesson will look like using Bloom’s Taxonomy, I use the SUCCESS acronym made famous by the Made to Stick principles to create a memorable storyline that funnels all the components of the lesson towards meeting those original takeaway goals.
Like many teachers, I prefer to give students the option for self- directed, active learning (i.e., sharing information or ideas, allowing students to experience the lesson through observation or simulation heavy in critical thinking and problem solving, then asking students to complete a reflective dialogue) and ask for a combination of team and individual knowledge assessments in various forms (e.g., projects, quizzes, oral presentations, reflections, etc.) to gauge their mastery of the lesson.
