Kia Ora! I am an ex kura kaupapa student fluent in te reo, who is passionate about my Maori culture and heritage and would love to spread my knowledge to those willing to learn :)

About Mahuika
I understand it can be intimidating to learn Te Reo Maori, especially if you are of Maori descent and lack that connection to who you are and where you come from. As a young child, I grew up in an English family with little, to no knowledge about where I came from, but since then I have gained connection. Everyone's journey is different and there is no particular place to start, however learning Te Reo Maori is a giant step in the right direction.
And for those of you who don't have any hereditary connection to Maori, you are, of course, more than welcome to learn as I am always delighted to see someone who is interested in my culture and people, no matter where you come from.
All I ask is that you trust in me to teach you the ropes in a welcoming space. However, this basic Maori class is designed for you to leave, so that you can go and pursue another class at a higher level and constantly improve.

I will be starting with pronunciation, simple terms, and phrases, working my way up as my students progress to structured sentences. The typical length of my sessions will be 45 minutes to 1 hour, once or twice a week depending on the workload.
I have NCEA levels 1, 2, and 3 in Te Reo Maori and NCEA level 1, and 2 in Te Reo Rangatira (accelerate Maori) awarded to me by NZQA. I studied at a Kura Kaupapa Maori which means for 6 years of my schooling I was only allowed to speak Maori, no English. I do not personally have any teaching experience however am more than confident in teaching the basic terms and making sure that my student fully understands. I have helped some of my family and friends gain a basic understanding of the language which helped them go on to a higher education in Te Reo Maori.
The lessons I will be teaching are aimed towards any age from 10+. For adults, remember that it is never too late to learn something new.
