About Fotini

I’m Fotini, a native Greek speaker with a lifelong relationship with language, literature and the humanities.

I studied Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Cyprus, with studies extending across Ancient, Byzantine and Modern Greek, Latin, literature, history, philosophy and drama.

Over the years, my professional life has taken me through education, journalism and editing in Cyprus and Australia. I’ve taught children and adults and worked with language in very different settings.

What I enjoy most about teaching is going beyond the answer itself — exploring why language works the way it does, how it developed, and the connections between language, history and culture.

I’m also currently studying Law, continuing what has probably always been a habit of mine: learning, questioning, interpreting and looking at things from more than one angle.

About the lesson

Latin can look intimidating when it is taught as endless tables, endings and rules to memorize. I prefer to make the structure of the language understandable.

Lessons are adapted to your level, your goals and what you are studying. We can work through grammar, vocabulary, morphology, syntax, translation and the close reading of Latin texts, while looking at why particular forms and constructions are used rather than simply memorizing the correct answer.

I also like making connections between Latin, Greek and modern languages where they help something click. Understanding where words and structures come from can make a language that initially seems very unfamiliar much easier to navigate.

Lessons are suitable for school and university students, as well as adults learning Latin independently or returning to it after many years.

I can also work with students encountering Latin through Classics, history, theology, ecclesiastical texts or legal studies, including those who want to understand Latin terminology, expressions and their linguistic context rather than simply memorize translations.

We can work with your existing course, textbook or texts, or build lessons around the particular areas you want to understand.

A typical lesson is 60 minutes, with the content and pace adapted to the individual student.
